Hi

At work we have a spreadsheet that accumulates data during the course of the month, and is then used to generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports. The reports are based on appropriate subsets of the main data, and are created using pivot tables.

Due to some changes at work I needed to update the spreadsheet, and spent the weekend working on it on my 1.4Ghz Mac mini.

All went well, and I was able to run all three reports on the mini.

Back at work, a different story.

The daily and weekly reports ran OK. But the monthly just blew out every PC I tried it on with "Not Enough Memory" errors. For the monthly, the pivot table is trying to analyse around 15,000 lines of spreadsheet data, but it appears the PC's cannot do it.

I've tried it on a couple of 1.8Ghz Windows 2000 with 256MB RAM, and a few 2Ghz Windows XP SP2 with 256 MB RAM. On all machines I've increased the Virtual Memory to the max 4095MB but still they crash with the same error. I know that 256 MB isn't goodenough anyway, but if I've maxed out the VM would adding extra physical memory actually help?

One of the XP machines actually didn't crash, but after hanging for an hour I did a force quit.

The changes I made to the spreadsheets wouldn't have caused the problems; the only other difference this month is that the amount of data over previous months has increased by about 3,000 lines.

Obviously this isn't exactly a Mac problem; just demonstrates how fantastic my mini is. However in the context of why does it work on one and not on the other, does anyone have any suggestions, and how to fix it?????

Thanks

Strix

Virtual memory does not work well with Office in either environment. Considering what you have for work needs, a minimum of 512 (more is better) - any kind of heavy lifting in XL I strongly recommend 1 GB. Especially if you have Win XP, 256 is barely enough to get the basics done. Also, depending on what else is in the workbook in adition to the Pivot Tables (i.e. formulas, especially volatile functions) can make it unbearable.
