Hi, I was hoping to get some advice on the photo biz!

Long story short: I'm a high school student who has a talent for photography, I'm starting this year as sophomore editor and a shoo-in for editor-in-chief of the yearbook next year, I've been recommended for photojournalism internships, I've had several jobs within my school for portraits, I want to be able to work at something I love (I've already held a writing, another one of my passions) position at an independent news source).

However, now I'd really like to take my "career" in a photographic direction. How do I start?

Can anyone offer any advice on how to get started? Maybe some books, websites, or just plain wisdom? I won't pretend to be an expert on the photography business, so I'm reaching out for some help. Thanks!

First, go to www.opensourcephoto.net and click on the "OSP Forum" link to the right. Join the forum and start asking questions. It's probably the best forum I've ever come across on the internet (sorry macnn) filled with helpful people. It's be the best resource for getting started. Depending on your area, there may even be people around you from the forum who are willing to help you get started.

What kind of photography are you interested in? Commercial, editorial, fine art — some of each?

I have a Masters of Fine Art (emphasis = photography). My undergrad degree is a BFA in graphic design. I make my living doing both. I'm happy to answer any questions.
