I've downloaded the OS 9.04 updater, but when I try to install it on my old beige G3, the installer won't go any further than to the "select the disk" part. The button is grayed out that would allow me to proceed.
I have a G4 CD with 9.04 on it, but it's not an "updater," so I'm not sure I should try to work with it on the G3.
Thanks for any advice on this.

You have to get 9.0 first, then run the updater.
E-mail me and we'll talk, I can make a 9 disc image for you to download if you have speedy internet access.

You cant just "update". You have to upgrade. You need OS 9 then you can update it.

redrockdes, have you tried installing 9.04 from the G4 CD? Or do you get an error message? If not you could probably upgrade to 9.04 with that.

No you can't do that. Mac OS disks that come with new systems are made so that they can not be used in older computers. Even a new G4 disk won't work in a G4 that came out 18 months ago. An iBook disk won't work in an iMac. And so on.... you are going to have to buy a retail version of 9 if you want it on the beige Mac.

It hadn't occurred to me that 9.0 is still on the shelves at stores, since X has been out for so long. (duh...!)
I did go ahead and buy it, but thanks for the offer!
