That is the question!
All the software features that Steve announced (the letter when scrolling, brightness, games) are on the 1.2 update. Except from the search function. Am I right or am I just going blind????

I think you're right. And if so, that's purely and simply a case of software crippling to get us to upgrade. Nice.

yep...tis pretty lame. i think the software will be upgraded on our 5th gens when the 6th gen ipods come out, just like how the 3rd gen got on the go playlist functionality when the ipod photo came out, even the 4g ipods had the feature since its introduction.

I know what you mean. I hate that they do that but I think that we should all post in feedback and hopefully we will get it in an update in the near future.

I doubt that it is a hardware related issue. IT was the same when some of the newer features came out for the 4G iPods then they added some of the previous features to older models.

I got my 3G in spring '04, before the 4G and long before the photo, and it always had on-the-go.

I'm just glad that we got the capabilty to play the new games. (Admittedly, it's in Apple's best interest to allow as many people as possible to play them, since they are a source of revenue, but still.)

I want someone to firmware dump the newest iPod, I want to see if I can flash my old (-ish) 30 Gig with the new Firmware and pick up the search features.

youre dreaming...the 3g didnt originally have on-the-go playlists till the software update.

heres the ilounge review on the 4th gens 'new operating system'

Apple 4G iPod: New iPod Users’ Review | iLounge iPod Accessory Reviews

"The only other changes to the iPod are truly minor tweaks to the iPod’s operating system - ones new users are highly unlikely to notice. Chief among them are enhanced menu customization, such that you can make it easier to reach or search your songs with fewer button presses, the ability to dynamically create and save multiple playlists full of songs using only your iPod’s controls, and finally, the previously noted ability to make two adjustments ("faster" or “slower") to the playback speed of audio books..."

in other words...you could make a playlist on the 3g...but not multiple playlists like on the 4g.

Apple is bad when it comes to upgrading/adding new features to older iPods. They want you to buy a new one, not continue to use the old one.

I betcha they can do gapless playback on the 3G iPods, but it will never happen.
