So I thought my fan noise was gone after I initially had it brought to Apple to fix the whine/heat. But I was so damn wrong. I don't know why they didn't replace my fan assembly, the problem was so easy to duplicate and I really don't want to be w/o my mbp for a 3rd week (already had two fixes).

Anyways, watch this video. This time i caught it on video for ur listening pleasures. Sit back, turn up the volume, grab some popcorn, and enjoy.

YouTube - MacBook Pro GPU (right speaker) fan noise

(video just uploaded, try again in a few mins if it doesn't work yet)

Seriously, that sound is pretty damn loud. It was recorded w/ my Sony digi cam. Lets just say the noise level is about 3/4 of max volume on the laptop, so you can get an idea of how loud it is.

I'm gonna show this video to the Genius at the store, that way he won't give me bs. At this point, I'm seriously considering AppleCare/ProCare. It's sad this has to happen to influence me to purchase it. But I still love my Apple

Maybe I'll name my MBP "blender" from now on.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I had a similar problem that started about two weeks after I got my MBP but at some point it just disappeared. It started out of the blue and disappeared the same way. Unless it comes back I'm not going to bring it in, because I doubt I could convince the service tech of what was wrong when there's nothing to hear.

In your case the sound is so loud and obnoxious it should be no problem to get the tech to order a replacement fan. Maybe you can convince him to order the necessary parts and call you back once he's ready. That way you'll only be without your MBP for a day or so. My MB is getting fixed that way right now. They seemed pretty cool about it. You might as well try. Good luck.

You may have better luck calling Applecare. That way, you can hold your telephone's receiver over your MBP for the rep on the other end of the line to hear. Most of the Apple Stores I've been in are pretty loud and you may have a hard time getting the "genius" to take you seriously if s/he can't hear the noise over the din.

This is exactly what happened to my MBP. It scared the **** out of me when it started. They replaced it, though, along with the battery, logic board, and inverter assembly. Took two weeks, but part of that problem was the battery (the recall started the day after I got my MBP back with the new battery, which was what they were waiting for).

So I'm shipping my mbp back in a 2nd time, this time for a pulsating keyboard backlight and noted to the specialist that my right fan is making a loud noise. But he insisted that it was normal under heavy GPU use, he apparently never heard my youtube video. And I highly that it is "normal."

So how should I approach this? The noise is hard to duplicate, thus making it difficult to convince anyone of this.

If possible, try to take it to a different Apple store. The people at the Genius Bar at the closest store to me gave new meaning to the word genius to say the least. Whereas, I drove a bit further to a different store and the person working at the Genius Bar there knew right away about my problem.

It sounds like just a broken exaust fan, you only hear it when using a GPU intensive program because that is when your computer is the hottest, (thus resulting in an increase in fan RPM)

You have two fans, one on the left, and one on the right, just tell them your right exaust fan is broken and sounds like you stuck a card in a bike wheel and they should replace it no problem. They are there to make your life better, not give you a hard time. if you are being an honest level-headed customer, then I see no reason why they shouldn't fix this promptly .... if they give you a bull crap excuse, go to a different apple store and never do business with that one (I would also report it to apple...just incase that actually does make some sort of difference)

I've never had a problem with applecare or the genius bar, in the.. uh,, probably 5 times I have been there? 3 broken ipods and 2 computer issues have all been fixed in-store.. (had the parts or just gave me a new referb one they had in the back.)

then again, I have not had a single issue with my MBP.

sucks that people have to post stuff like that on youtube... the one who cries the loudest is always the one heard. nobody posts videos of their perfectly working macbook pro, so now that people have seen that video....all of a sudden ALL MBP and apple products are over-priced faulty peices of crap... oh well.

If it doesnt get taken care of , contact the Apple customer advocacy group or simply email Steve Jobs ([email protected] I think). They will take care of you, don't give up hope. My buddy just got a new Macbook to replace his iBook that had done in the shop three times in a row.

That's exactly what happened to mine - only both fans went sour. This is my second unit, and second time going in. The fans went in the first unit too, and they ended up replacing it... the "genius" at the Apple Store gave me BS and wouldn't even turn the thing on to listen to it... but sent it in anyway insisting that it was a logic board issue. Obviously, it's a mechanical issue. Luckily, I've been working with Apple Executive relations this whole time and they promised to make this a very speedy fix. I highly recommend contacting them (use the Steve Jobs e-mail listed above, and write a detailed, yet civil e-mail. They will most likely call you back the next business day, so include your phone number.)

Good luck!
