Norton Unerase MAY be able to help.
Or you could use your Apple install CD to create a new system folder.
During the install go to options button- select "Clean Install" it will create a new system folder & rename your old one to "Previous System Folder".
After installing second System folder, Retart from the CD again & do the following:
Take out the desired file from the new "System Folder" & put it in the "Previous System Folder". Trash the new system folder & rename the "Previous System Folder to "System Folder" Restart. -Thtats it.
Or you could trry to find it on the internet at some of these macfixit sites.
Or even Apple's own website.

If you had not already been using either Norton's (w/ Filesaver on) or Tech Tool Pro (w/ Trach Cache on), then neither of these utilities will help you get back your deleted file.
Finding it on the original CD or updater is a good idea, but rather than going thru all the installation process described by Hey! Who... , get the following:

The utility is TomeViewer - makes it very easy to extract files from OS CD's or updaters, or just about anything that uses a "tome"

TomeViewer is absolutely the way to go! It's pretty intuitive to use.

I agree with Gregg. Get yourself Tomeviewer, stick in your OS CD, and look for the extension.

That all seems a little complicated.
Why don't you just insert your software restore cd and mount the disk image.
With the discs that came with my g4 it is at the bottom of the window in a folder called 'Configurations' and is called 'Power Mac G4 HD.img'
Once mounted just drill down to the control panels and copy the file over.

I would agree that tome viewer is just as easy, unless you first have to find it and download it.
(you still have to find and insert the cd with the hard drive image on it though)
anyway I just thought it was a useful tip.

Thanks for the info. I used TomeViewer and finally found the file, but every time I expanded it and then used it I got a Error #11 -memory so after the 3rd time I relized I did have a previous system folder from when I reinstalled OS 9.0.4 after upping to 9.1 so I just dragged it over. Thanks for the help.
