I installed the downloaded version os OS 9.1. My question is when I get my CD version is it safe to install that on the same machine? Is there any benefit?

the basic part of the OS will be identical, so they would be no benefit in re-installing it. if, however, you use a language kit, first-generation powermac, or want whatever little extra goodies are on the CD, they you'll want to use the CD to install 9.1 or the "extras".
