Hello, brand new to this. I have an iMac 350 w/64 MB of Ram. What should I set my virtual memory and my IE 4.5.1.memory to for best/fastest surfing results. Also, are there any other tricks I should know?

it would be a good idea to keep a sharp eye on RAM deals and buy more at your earliest convenience, at least another 64 and likely it would be better to just buy a 128M module... sounds like a lot perhaps but if, for example, you are going to surf and run Photoshop and maybe AppleWorks and/or other apps concurrently, your iMac will love having at least 192M RAM.

Virtual memory uses disk space in a way to subsitute for real RAM, therefore you can (theoretically if not actually) set your VM as high as the open space on your HD. But see if you get good results by setting it to double the figure of real RAM you have.

IE 4.5.1 memory allocation can be set at around 18M and in its Preferences settings you can configure the Proxies setting with a dummy proxy to speed IE up a bit

Go to IE's pref's settings and select Proxies and then check/click on the 'Web Proxy' box and type http://www.macnn.com/ into the Web Proxy field, click on the 'Settings' button, fill in the info fields with any data (port 80, any username, any password, click on proxy for local servers, and in the list for direct connections put http://www.apple.com/ ) and now UNcheck (disable) the 'Web Proxy' button. Also, you can use any URL not just macnn or apple.

And do upgrade to OS9 if you haven't already.

Thanks for the wisdom. I am runnign OS 9 now and will look to purchase more memory. I am using Road Runner Cable modem and they have recommended to disable the proxy. Thanks again.

well, yes... you see, the proxy is configured but not used/enabled...
you should perform the setting(s) as described, if you do it will not result in an enabled proxy... it will result in a dummy proxy setting which IE 'expects' to have, at least, it 'wants to see' a proxy setting regardless of whether it is actually enabled.
