I am a recent "friday" convert to the mac OS.
I have read several threads that suggest a fresh install of the OS will rid the HD on much
unneeded files.
Can someone point me in the right direction of doing a new install?
Does inserting the original disk ask to partition and intall?
Lame, I know, but I am new to the OS
I have reinstalled the Windows OS MANY MANY MANY time..hench the change.
Thanks in advance
Rickg

i just re-installed osx for the first time (i'm a newbie also) last friday when i got my mbp and it was pretty straightforward, basically just insert the dvd while in osx, then select the install osx icon, system will reboot and then just go from there.
if your objective is to not install some of the additional files, drivers, programs, etc, go slow as you proceed step by step cause it can be easy to miss the customize/options and you will end up installing more than you intended. i had to do it 2x cause i missed it the first time. good luck.

A large part of that "extra stuff" is language support most people will never use. This part can be removed using monolingual ( Monolingual) if you don't want to do a fresh install.

I would recommend monolingual after a regular install. There is no need to partition the drive, in fact there are far more reasons to not partition the drive. Go slow through the re-install process, you will find options to completely reformat and start over with a wiped clean drive, re-install while preserving your User account, not installing extra printer drivers and other languages. The process is fairly safe, just take your time going through it.
And you will never have to re-install the Mac OS as often as Windoze!
