It allows you to recover from irreparable filesystem corruption?

thanks chuckit, yup, actually im a switcher, my very first mac just arrived so i wonder if OS X would let us avoid installing programs that we never need like windows does. And is there any necessary work that we need to do in the reinstall process in order to get macs run faster smoothly?

I reinstalled Mac OS X when I got my MacBook a few months ago, mainly because there was so much stuff installed which I didn't need/would never need, like languages, printer drivers, iWork and Garageband loops etc. It was surprisingly easy and took about 1/2 an hour, much easier than every Windows install I've ever done!

You don't need to do a fresh or clean OS X install just because there are a lot of programs you're not going use. You can just trash them (there's no registry like in Windows, so you uninstall almost all Mac programs by just dragging them to the Trash) and when you empty the trash you have all that disk space back. Much easier to simply dump Garageband than reinstall, as easy as a reinstall is.

There are no third party crapwares included with OS X like on a new Dell or HP. The only thing like that you'll see is a trial of Office:Mac (which you should UNINSTALL-it IS a Microsoft product, after all).

How about after upgrading hardware? Like going from a geforce2 mx to a ti4600 and from a single 867 processor to a dual 800? I've been running the same install and have been wondering if it would be a good idea to start fresh.

No real need. The 'reinstal' as a troubleshooting tool is largely a windows thing.
