My 1.25 eMac just went over 212 RAC, that is the best that I have seen from it.
Still 230 below my Dell laptop though. 1.6 Pentium M.

@zombie67: Nope. BOINC manager 5.4.9 with the superbench core client substituted and Alex's worker. On the MBP and I386Mini there's no such problem.
I'll have a second box like this up soon. Then I'll know whether it's a unit specific 'feature' (=>reinstall from scratch) or another reason to look into.
I should mention that these -146 errors occur within a big batch of short WUs resulting in -9 errors. Is it possible that the worker isn't able to cope with the format of certain WUs?

I think your problems have to do with the inability of BOINC or the worker (don't know which) to allocate the shared memory it needs. I got the same errors on certain short WUs on my Quad once I started crunching with v7.1, and they went away after I implemented this fix.

Hey, check out the SETI@home page, I'm user for the day.
Wow, 24 hours of fame. Go me.
Someone, possibly from this thread, must have nominated me. If you're reading this, thanks for the nod.

Too all Intel buddies out there...
I'm having troubles downloading WUs on Intel machines... the most I get to download on a single machine is 5 at a time, which can last couple of hours max. And this happens to all the Intel machines I've BOINC'ed at work. However, my home PowerPC iMac downloads days of WUs.
Tried re-installing BOINC and repairing disk permission, but to no avail.
Any remedies to this problem...? Coz I'm running SETI@home as a daemon and sometimes I don't have access to them to keep the WU cache filled, they might just ran out before my shift ends.
Thanks.

I'm not having any problems with Intel machines downloading WUs. I have an iMac, Mac Book Pro and Mac Pro all downloading just fine.
What does the log say?

Have you checked the "Connect to network about every......" settings in the projects general preferences. I find it best to have this set to 3 days.

For months I've had it set to 10 days, I've even set the client to "Run always", and created a separate preferences for these Intel systems.... but the systems always failed to download more than 20K sec of WUs....

I have a similar situation with an Intel mini I started crunching with a couple of days ago. Its cache hovers between four and five WUs (including those currently crunching).
I'm guessing that the initially small WU-cache could be due to the fact that BOINC and SETI-Enhanced might use a combination of average WU-turnaround time and host-RAC as a metric to determine the size of the WU-cache. If this is so, it would take quite some time for the RAC to be high enough to allow for the cache to build up.
This is all conjecture, however. Unfortunately, I don't remember how long it took other machines to build up their WU-caches. Time will tell, I suppose...
Edit: I have the WU-cache size set to 3 days, and an identical mini with the same setting that has been crunching for several months has a cache of nearly 50 WUs.

FYI: Computer summary
My G5 is at 1,199.32 which is the closest it's been to a 1200 RAC. So it's
certainly possibly - just a little more.

Team MacNN now has EIGHT (8) machines in the top twenty Hosts on Seti at Home for Recent Average Credit.
Fifteen (15) machines in the Top Twenty Hosts are Apple Mac's
Maybe Reader50 will give us a headline in the Team News page.?
Maybe Apple will give us a headline?
btw G5 owners should check THIS out

If it were easier to find the Intel version of Alex Kan's worker, we could probably do even better. It was only by pure chance that I came upon it and realized that I could use it on my computer.

He's right. If you go to our home page, and then click on Resources, and then click on SETI optimization, there is *nothing* there about alexkan's stuff. There is a bunch of dead links and old stuff. It should probably all be replaced with a single link to alexkan.

Thanks much! I've followed the instructions over and over again but the file never got saved, it seems, despite the editor telling that it was auto-saved.
'sysctl -A | grep shm' always returned the 4 GB setting.
What am I possibly missing?

Autosaving in Emacs doesn't work the way you think it does. (It saves to a temporary file so that you can recover from a lost session.) To save in Emacs after you make the modifications, you need to press Ctrl-X Ctrl-S.

Hello,
I installed v7 for PPC last week and since then I follow my average credit to drop every day. It does not drop a lot but it drops about 10-20 credits every day. Anyone with similar experience;
If it continues like this until the end of the week I am thinking to go back to v6.
Hardware is a G5 Quad (2,5GHz) with 2GB RAM

-install chud tools. in the processor pane in system preferences insure nap mode is deselected.
-under power management, insure that processor performance is set to highest.
Beyond that, I can't account for why you're getting that kind of performance -
you should be doing significantly better with this new one.
When was the last time you rebooted by the way? 2 gigs of ram should be
plenty - are you running a lot of things in the background?

the latest from berkley regarding server outage causing our 403 errors
November 14, 2006
A configuration problem on our servers have caused workunit downloads to fail since yesterday afternoon. This has been fixed. However, we are bringing the whole project down for our regular Tuesday outage to back up our database. We should be back up in a few hours (22:00 UTC).
regards

thnx for the info but I didn't see any difference.
I reboot usually once in a week sometimes more often.
My values have now dropped from aprox 1800-1900/day to 1000 per day. I will wait until Saturday but I think it is clear that v7 and my quad are not a good combination.

Its my development Mac and I am running NetBeans on it. After several hundred compilations, debugging and tests, I need to reboot to refresh the memory. Otherwise the system becomes very slow.

Really? It's 1351 now. I wonder if the outage messed with the RAC. It has been running only about 3 weeks, and is used as a daily work machine too. Left alone, it does about 1900/day. My quad G5 does about 2800-2900/day for comparison. All running alexkan's app, of course.

Mine topped at 1,351.62 around Nov. 10 and dropped from that time for a couple of days and now it's slowly gearing up again since late last week - while yours is steadily zooming away. It depends what data the majority of WUs contain. Bad, if the box fetched a big bunch of WUs with relatively low credit yield.

My G5 quad 4x2.5ghz finally took #14...2791*
My G5 iMac 1.8ghz is up to 453
My G4 iBook 1.33ghz is up to 277
Apparently, my iMac 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo topped out at 1497 before the alpha BOINC client crapped out. Rebuilding now....
*The highest ranked quad is currently 3062. That's 271 (10%!!) higher than me. So Bob, how do you do it??
On a similar note, any way to OC a G5 quad?

Is there a resource for how to set up your machine with all the (suspected) tweaks and secrets for getting the best crunching performance? I always seem to get less than others with the same machine as me!

I wonder if we will see an 8 Core Mac Pro in the near future crunching SETI?
Does the current client make use of them?

There is not much of a secret. It is all about getting the latest optimized software and dedicating your Mac 99,9% to SETI. NAP mode (developer tools needed) and Performance -> Highest (System Prefs) do the rest.

NAP? What's that? I have developer tools, but have never heard of it.

The Dev Tools installs the Processor preference pane. It offers a checkbox to "Allow Nap", by default, this box is checked.
Nap allows the CPU(s) to save power when the system is under less than full load. Turning it off will produce a small performance improvement under full load, probably by eliminating the overhead caused by having the nap code enabled.
The major penalty is the system will draw more power under anything less than full load, magnified by the fans needing more power to run faster.

*DING*
It finally did it, and still climbing.
Here is the highest S@H RAC my macs have ever done to date (all using v7):
Quad G5 = 2948
iMac (C2D 2.33ghz) = 1512 (right now)
MBP (C2 2.16ghz) = 1168
iMac (G5 1.8ghz) = 514
iBook (G4 1.33ghz) = 303
PB (G4 1.25) = 268

I really want a new iMac, but I have to save up money first so I can afford one.
All 3 of my computers together do not even equal a C2D iMac.

Is it my sole problem or do others also encounter it? Double-clicking the new post link in the notification mail http://forums.macnn.com/72/team-macn...ized/new-post/
always takes me to page 8 instead of the new post (or at least the last page) out of Eudora. Emptying Safari's cache didn't help at all...
P.S. Clicking that link in my post works. It's a Eudora=>Safari issue.

I'm running Eudora 6.2.3 in OS 10.4.8, Safari 2.0.4 on a MBP and it worked fine - I double-clicked the link on a note dated 10-24, and it took me to that date; I tried the note on 12/4/06 and it took me to your post... Hope this helps you narrow it down...

Thanks, Beadman! Same S/W combo but PM7,3, which is my workhorse. Will try it on another box. This seems to be a MacNN only problem. Other forum notifications like from the SETI site work just fine.
