This is probably going to sound a bit unorthodoxed, but my friend needs help finding a simple virus that will crash his computer. His parents just went out and bought a Mac Mini for a "family" christmas present, but say they won't hook it up unless A. There Dell right now goes out before christmas or B. Its christmas morning. They aren't the smartest surfers and have already got themselves into many sticky situations and have a lot of malware on their computer, but nothing to much so to crash it. I was wondering if anyone knew of a Windows Virus that would crash his computer, preferably with the ablility to still get back some of the files from the harddrive with the Mini. If he did loss all his files then that would be alright since he has the most important ones (music, movies, and photos) all burned to disks. I'm not asking for a link or a file of the virus, just a name. I will do all the dirty work of finding it for him. I know this sounds a little wrong but both him, his mom, and I are in on it. It's just his stubborn dad would won't unless something happens to their "wonderful Dell." Anything would help.

Um, google viruses download?

I dunno...check to see if they aren't patched and surf the web with IE. That's bound to get a virus pretty quickly.

The problem is that most viruses nowadays don't want to fry your system. It's hard to be virulent when your host is dead. Viruses nowadays steal data, muck with your system performance and spam all your friends, but most don't go in for the kill.

It is absolutely immoral what your friend is trying to do and what you are trying to help him do.

His parents work hard to get these things for him and to intentionally cause damage which would cost $$ to fix or result in bringing down the resale value of it or otherwise make a usable machine unusable is unconscionable.

This is a tiny indication of what is wrong with America.

Saving his parents from ignorantly exposing themselves to keyloggers and identity theft is immoral?

The thing is though that they are going to get rid of the Dell, as in just throw it away. They don't plan on fixing it if anything happens to it. They already have the mac mini but his dad won't let him open it yet. He should technically be able to since he put in more then half the money for it. We are just wanting to persuade his dad into opening it up before christmas. His main reason he doesn't want to is because he thinks that there are things he can't do on his Mac and even though about a dozen people have told him he could, he is still stubborn and will not just try it. He has to research everything instead of just test driving it. As I stated in my first post, both his own wife and his son are backing me into helping infect their computer so that they can use the Mac.

A virus isn't what you want. You could of course just tell him to have some patience, or go nuts with regedit and delete random keys.

Just use a baseball bat and beat the Dell to little pieces. Then blame it on that new windows virus that is going around.

A simple deleted essential system file will guarantee problems or no Windoze on the next reboot. No virus needed.

Or you can try the most sensible thing and actually try to persuade him with good arguments, of which there are plenty for not going Windoze. Perhaps have a Mac-using friend come over and give a demo or go to the local Apple Store and have the employees give it a whirl.

If that is the reason he wants to get and use a Mac sooner rather than later he should tell the parents of their vulnerability. And if that's the case why hasn't he told them before now?

Do they have an A/V program? If so these may not work.
But go to cultdeadcow.com

You can find the trusty back orifice to reek havoc on that computer without really wiping anything out.

The other thing you can do is just stop some services they use... or just delete boot.ini (make a back up of it though). Without it, it won't boot. You can always boot a live CD later and restore the file.

Although I'd think that if the parents have any sense, they'd connect the dots.

Tell your friend to find a seasonal Xmas job until she saves enough for a Mac mini (with student discount) if she wants it that bad.

What's that? Kids who are too excited to use a Christmas present and try to trick their parents into letting them use it early? Nah, that never happened back in the good old days...

oh, please. he can't wait a few weeks? this is the kind of stupid thing that can have unintended consequences. bad ones. for the perpetrator. and the kind of thing kids think they'll never be found out at. erroneously.

If one of my kids pulled something like this they'd be seriously sorry. and that sorry-ness would definitely be related to computer usage.

and if the mom's in on it, that's just sad. What, is she 11 years old too?

And to try to ease over the stupidity of this by saying it's for their own good because the PC isn't secure in the first place is just the kind of weak rationalization a kid who can't wait a month for xmas would come up with.

I snort at the patheticness.

and I'm not usually mean.

Because the word is not "virius" (cf. radii).

It is also not "viri" because the -i pluralization is for masculine nouns in Latin, while "virus" is neuter.

Wow i see i have touched a nerve with quite a few people. You all can think it's wrong that i'm both trying to help out a friend and his family since at this moment right now they are infected with tons of spam and malware that could possibly be giving out their personal information. They aren't the brightest people and anytime my friend and I try to get rid of anything that might be causing problems, his dad flips out. He doesn't understand that since he banks online and uses eBay and does just about everythign without running anything, not even firewall, that he is susceptible to a great deal of problems. I know that it isn't always probable that this is happening but it sure it possible. So if you say that it's wrong for me to try to show him something better and teach that there is an alternative to his little "Mad World" that is called Windows, the so be it. For the rest of you would truely see it my way, please just try to help me.

So then teach him about those dangers. You can also prevent those "issues" with Windows as long as you are careful.

Just because someone is a terrible driver doesn't mean you just give them a car with airbags - you teach them how to drive better.

this is a simple one:

make a Flash animation or a small program in Visual Basic that has the following properties:

1)runs at startup so that it loads up after you log into Windows or something
2)covers the entire screen
3)has a message that says that says something like "All critical Windows System files are either missing or corrupt. Have a nice day."
4)you'll only be able to quit it by performing some other unique 3-button keystroke (not CTRL+ALT+DEL). Obviously, you'll want to design the Flash Animation or VB program so it doesn't allow the victim to press the commonly known CTRL+ALT+DEL combo.
5)disables ALT+TAB (switching from this program to another one)

Once the parents buy into the trick, simply disable the program and no harm is done. (one would hope).

Don't bully me, I got an Uzi... HOO-HAH!
