The music of a decade ago that people are still listening to is just a small percentage of the music that was being produced at the time, a lot of which mainstream culture has largely forgotten.

Of course, they'll be small groups of fanboys and cult followings for a good deal of todays original, underground music. But which mainstream artists of today do you will still have a mainstream listenership in 50-years? Tomorrows Beatles, Dylans, Elvises, Rolling Stones, if you will.

For the White Stripes and Sting they are more from my own reckoning. I got U2 from going to the ITMS.

Hehe. You know it will be Britney Spears.

A lot of the "classics" from the 60s were pure bubblegum pop of the day. Heck, a lot of the classic classics were popular pieces of the day. Vivaldi was the Britney Spears of those times if you want.

I think we were supposed to be limiting ourselves to artists who are actually still recording music.

I add Bruce Springsteen.

Side note: scoff at Weezer if you like (although I realize they are on "indefinite hiatus"), but it's far more likely than abe's The White Stripes.

I have a Pathé phonograph that I sometimes still use just for the heluvit.

No electricity needed of course. It looks sorta like this one:

I've got lots of discs of people I've never heard of.

I'd put money on Radiohead being the Led Zep of tomorrow. Eminem—like it or not—will be recognised as a 21-century icon. Beck will have a place in history. Spears, like Paris Hilton, might be remembered, but not for her music so much as for her role in the 21st-century cult of celebrity—just as Marilyn Monroe is remembered not as an actress but a 50s Hollywood sex symbol.

I'm going to slap you for even mentioning Radiohead in the same sentance as Led Zeppelin.

I thought that might be misinterpreted. But I don't mean they are in any way comparable except for the fact they are both enjoy mainstream appeal while at the same time being experimental and innovative. My prediction is just that Radiohead will be as popular.

Nickelback
Evanescence

But only because I'm a cynic.

I was laughing at what he said. It just came off as a odd thing for the bird to say.

I think you took it far too seriously.

And yes, I already read your example.

No need to be defensive.

What you folks need to be looking for is a popular artiste with a high output. One CD every five years ain't gonna cut it.

Why does everyone assume overhyped alternative artists will be the ones listened to in 50 years?

If im sitting in my rocking chair at the nursing home, and some U2 or radiohead starts playing, my blood will boil. 50 years doesn't help either of those bands get any better

Fergie, of course!

She's fergalicious!

[/sarcasm]

Eh, I doubt all those alternative bands will be remembered. The only ones who will last will have to be prime examples of bands that pushed the envelope and really started something fresh and new -- like the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Nirvana is a no-brainer, but like others have mentioned, they [obviously] aren't recording.

Celine Dion all the way!!!!

Anyway what you have to consider is that back then in the 60's there was no net and it was way tougher for the artists to survive. Additionally the music buisness back then spun around the single releases - which was the most medium bought at that time. Albums were secondary. Today we have the reverse: album kinda took off and single sales dropped heavily.

I'd say thanks to the Internet music market in 50 years will be much more colorful with current artists that paved the way for the future generations of singers & bands.

I honestly think the performers of today are going to be largely forgotten, and people will still be listening to classics like the Beatles in 50 years.

Not Green Day, you can't go from making music about nothing, and get famous doing that, then suddenly decide you want to be political and expect to make a lasting effect on society.

Weezer is one I can see making a lasting stay, as the blue album is still striking to people who hear it for the first time, and it's 13 years since it's been recorded.

and so on...
possibly, the Beatles

OK, they're not "pop" mainstream artists of today, but they are the mainstream.

Bands that were once great and went to shithouse later on (I am looking at you Radiohead and Weezer!) probably won't make it.

Bands like Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Eminem and Britney Spears will. One hit wonders will still be played. Pop music will never go out of style and there will always be new alternative bands to replace the old alternative bands. Some might have a chance of making it, like U2 and AC/DC, but you can pretty much forget Radiohead or even Nirvana (apart from Smells Like…). Nirvana didn't really do anything new, even killing yourself is passé nowadays.

I think it'd be pretty dank if a musician started killing fans, but was let off the hook every time a la Jacko.

I'm not sure what point you're making. No one's entire catologue is going to still be played on popular radio stations 50 years from now--I think there are probably like, what, 10 Led Zeppelin songs that are played with any frequency, even on the "Classic Rock" stations, and they had a ton of albums. Bands like Weezer or Nirvana, who had a couple of good albums that still have a presence in popular culture even over a decade later, will definitely make it into popular rotation decades from now, even if it is just "Smells Like..." and "Buddy Holly."

I have 5 White Stripe songs in my collection. 3 of Nirvana. 1 from Sting. None from U2.

I'm not listing my favorites. That's a liberal trait.

I agree. In 50 years people will have forgotten that these bands churned out a lot of crud and their truly good stuff will make it into rotation still fifty years from now. Just like we have forgotten the fluff from good old led too

U2 will (thankfully) disappear into obscurity once the marketing machine deems them no longer financially feasible, hopefully it is sooner than later. Sorry, but their peers are Bon Jovi and Shenia Twain, NOT Led Zeppelin or Radiohead.
