Where are pop-up windows?

All of a sudden (today), I decided I wanted to use the pop-up windows feature in the Finder and low and behold they don't work! I can only use view with Buttons and Icons. The rest, as List, as Pop-up Windows and as Window are greyed out. I did have Action GoMac in use for a year or so,which is a good Mac version of the Windoze Start feature, which I decided to stop using. Perhaps that application screwed up my View preferences.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

It sounds like you have the "Simple Finder" activated. Disable it in the Finder under "View Options"(?) or "Finder Preferences" -- I can't recall right now.

It is enabled by default, methinks, so deleting the Finder prefs will maintain the "Simple Finder" mode.

I deleted my Finder Preferences, but that didn't seem to work. Before doing that, and after, my Finder Prefs were set to Standard View, but Simple Finder was not checked. So I'm not sure what's happening here.

I've just done some experimenting and found that if I have the HD or any desktop folder icon selected, everything except icon and button is greyed out. If I open the HD or the desktop folder then all the choices become available. I'd never noticed that before, but maybe that's your problem?

Here's something either everyone overlooked, or I'm over-simplifying the problem...

While in finder, the desktop icons can ONLY be desplayed as icons or buttons. Since you have no window open, nothing can be displayed as a "pop-up window." To use pop-up window, what you do is you open a folder, (say your HD) then drag it to the bottow of the screen, and it'll appear as a tab. Or I guess you can select for the window to be "pop up" in some setting somewhere, which I don't use...
Also, keep in mind that the pop-up window behaves entirely different from task-bar of windows. You can ONLY keep folders as pop-up window tabs, not currently running applications...
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

Yes! You're right! The Pop-up Windows are not active in the Finder unless you're using them. Thanks, Evangellydonut.
I actually just discovered this. One has to open a folder, say, Apps and then click on the title bar, hold and drag down to the bottom... the folder becomes a pop-up window.
Problem solved. Thanks all, for tips.
