Questions for you gurus out there. Will the yet to be released and last iteration of the classic mac OS (9.1 perhaps) run on all power PC macs including the pre G3 macs ? What is the most recent OS that will run on the x086 macs ?

Any Mac that runs MacOS 9.0 now whould run the whole MacOS 9.x series. It's just a bug fix, not a major release. (supposedly.)

And I think you mean 680x0, not x086 ;-) If yes, I think MacOS 8.1 is as high as you can go on 040 machines. Not sure about 030 machines.

Herr, I wouldn't be so sure...the 7300 will work find with 8.5, but will die with 8.6, which is only suppose to be a "minor maintaince update."
Apple's Tech Info Library has a list of all the OS a particular machine is capable of handling, on a model by model basis...try to find that...

As for the 860x0 machines, yeah, the 040 can install 8.1, but if you want any sort of performance, you are pretty much stuck with 7.6.1 on 68040s, 7.5.5 on 68030s, and 7.1.x on earlier models.
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

Any PowerPC Mac with a PowerPC 603e, 604 and 604e processor running at around 160MHz and higher can run Mac OS 8 to 9 without much problem, although some may run OS 9 a bit slow, but still fast enough for most tasks.

Macs with a 68040 or 68LC040 processor can run Mac OS 8.1 and earlier (eg, Mac Quadra models). Some Macs with a 68030 processor can run Mac OS 7.6.1 and earlier (eg. IIci) but some can only run 7.5.5 and earlier because their ROMs are not 32-bit clean, (eg. IIx, IIcx). Macs with a 68000 (eg. Mac Plus) or 68020 (eg. Mac II) processor can only run 7.5.5 and ealier but those with a 68000 processor are too slow to run 7.5 to 7.5.5.

Tintim, we are not talking about theoretical here. I OWN a 7300/180, which uses a 604e CPU, and absolutely CANNOT handle 8.6. I have yet to try OS9 on it, but after re-formatting the drive 3 times, each after trying to update to 8.6, I'm pretty certain that the 7300 doesn't work with 8.6...

I have a Power Mac 5500 with a 603e at 225MHz without a L2 cache and I can run OS 8.0 to 9.0.4 without any problem on it. Yes, OS 9 is a bit slow but is still quite fast. Your Mac is considerably faster than mine and I would think it should run OS 9 and earlier just fine. There may be some issues with your 7300 hardware that you may fix possibly.

Hi All
I have a 7300/180 running OS9.0.4 here for about a month now and it has only crashed once-nothing too weird. Other than it has been a tad bit slower than before, everything seems ok. I run quark4.11, photoshop5 and freehand8 on it.
judging by that, I would presume my 8600/300 would run ok with OS9. Comments, anybody?

Hmm, I'm sitting in front of a 7300 that ran 8.6 for a long time! It's running 9.0.4 now.

Alas, I do have a G3 processor in it, perhaps that's the difference?

you say 'alas' as if that were a bad thing, the word alas is used to express sorrow, regret, grief, compassion, or apprehension of danger or evil.

and yes a G3 upgrade makes a great difference as you must know, MacOS 9.04 works great with a G3/G4 upgraded older Mac... my sister's 6360 is an example, Sonnet G3 upgraded, runs 9.04 and is very very stable...
