None of it would be true, of course. Your mom is an undoubtedly fine, loving and responsible person and a terrific parent.
But as posters we often jump to conclusions that do not take into account reality.
You have seen it yourself if you've spent any time here at all.
What you need to realize is that what happens here online is just a harmless version of what would REALLY happen if something happened.
Your mom would be recognized everywhere she went. People would point at her and shake their heads and say, "she's totally irresponsible and disgusting." "That woman is a disgrace! She can't control her kid." "How did anyone think she should be allowed to have a child?"
All because she loved you so much that she gave in to your request when maybe she shouldn't have.
And not that you would necessarily get in trouble with this weapon. When you showed it to your friends and one of them prevailed upon YOU to play with it and a mistake occurred...guess what?
Your MOM gets the blame!
Or when your friends tell their parents about your weapon or when word gets around at school about it, everyone will be saying how irresponsible your mom is. No one will want their kids to hang out with you or allow their kids to come over your house.
Someone might even call your mom or come by and talk with her about it.
And depending on what kind of person your mom is she MIGHT take offense at their telling her how to raise her child. Or she might be embarrassed to realize that those people are right and she shouldn't have given in to your request.
All of that crap she would have to go through.
And for what?
But maybe we are all wrong.
Perhaps you are mature enough to own and safeguard yourself and others from this weapon if it were in your care.
The men who used such weapons in war hundreds of years ago lived by a certain code and were prepared to die for that code.
What is the code that you live by?
Wow, so much to be said about a damn 16 year old who wants a sword!

I don't think I would have been able to get a sword, either. Get a gun instead.

I wouldn't either. You know damn well you are going to be swinging it around in your bedroom sooner or later and one small slip you impale yourself.

They must have spent thousands on an ad agency to come up with that tagline:

I HIGHLY advice you to learn how to inspect a sword if you even think about using it (Especially a $50 one, or any production sword, to be honest). You also need to learn how to clean and oil one.

What if you're wrong? It's wholesale. Mr. Sutokko makes these swords in limited quantities and they sell them for cheap. They're not "real" real so they're not worth that much, but they can be high quality.

SLO = A 'fake' sword
I can tell you these facts about that sword.
1) It's not handmade its a production sword
2) Folded steel for $50? Cheapest folded steel REAL blade runs a few grand easy
3) Sure its carbon steel, yet it doesn't say what grade. (Flag)
4) The Tsuba (handguard) is aluminum, a real sword should be steel
The most important thing... for $50 you have no quality control. Being it is a production sword the Tsuka (handle) isn't made specifically for that blade. They are made in quality and just put on, so they have the tendency to crack or split. So when you go swinging it around the handle flies off and kills someone. This is why I stated above (Learn to inspect a production sword before use). I've read quite a few horror stories of that. I've seen photos from a guy that bought a sword and found out the handle had broken during the forge and they welded it back and assembled it. When he inspected it he found this out, now had he have tried to cut that... I don't even want to think about it. When it comes to swords and prices. You REALLY have to look at what you pay for, and why most experts will tell you to buy books before you buy your first sword. I did research for months before I even bought my first blade.
BTW: Don't take any of my comments as attacks, I'm just trying to give you some knowledge that will keep you safe. A sword IS a weapon, and needs to be respected as that.

If you want to talk about straining for relevancy, start by looking at your 5 accounts and PL dramas.

My son has a number of swords, all of them "costume" swords. We have a number of other "costume" swords as well. We have ONE "real" sword in the house: my "ring guard" sword. And I have to agree that it's your mom's house so her rules apply.
Now let's look at "cool" versus "message." While a katana may look cool, about 99.9% of people who own them are posers and losers who only know the "cool look" of the sword, not the background, the metalurgy, the history, or the techniques associated with it-or ANY sword. The message (which is probably what your mother is seeing) is that of "I am one bad MF because I have this here sword." She has a lot of examples to base this on, by the way, so it's not her fault.
If you want "cool" AND are willing to put out some effort, find a kendo do in your area and take the lessons. And the bruises. You'll develop a number of things this way, including fitness and stamina, coordination, grace in movement, and most of all control. The skills from kendo apply to the entire life, from economy and smoothness of movement to deciding how and with what to spend your time. For what it's worth, my son (19) is taking fencing as one of his Phys Ed electives at school. That's a worthy task too.

Ninjas are sooooooooooo sweet that I want to crap my pants. I can't believe it sometimes, but I feel it inside my heart. These guys are totally awesome and that's a fact. Ninjas are fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. I can't wait to start yoga next year. I love ninjas with all of my body (including my pee pee).
