It reminded of a comparison I did years ago with a US friend of mine. While my passport showed Visa adhesive stamps for the 10-or-so countries I've visited, she had traveled to the same number of countries, but she only got red-ink stamps. Hers was not the exciting collection of souvenirs mine was.

Now US citizens can add one more to their passport, by travelling to Bolivia.

</tongue-in-cheek>

This ruling was done in a general immigration policy change, which shuffled many countries privileges towards visiting Bolivia.

the lefty Presidents down in South america do this as a revenge thing for the USA making it difficult to visit the USA (so people who visit here don't stay here etc).

I'm not aware of a big problem of Americans overstaying their visa's and staying in South America however.

Actually, the decision was helped by the fact that Bolivian politicians have been rejected from getting a US visa for diplomatic stuff.

This is like a "We reserve the right to serve anyone" clause in businesses, which is why I think all countries have the right to impose Visa requirement to every foreign person.

Was wondering the same thing here.

Do American's always expect to be treated differently than the rest of the world ?
Sorry, that of course is a rhetorical question.

Just out of curiosity, are there any countries that the US requires tourist visas from?

I think so, yes

the countries listed above are part of the visa waiver program. US citizens can enter visa-free, and in turn their citizens do the same in the US, with time limits, of course.

I'm sure the 14 Americans that visit Bolivia this year will find this to be a minor inconvenience.

Umm... OK. So if I ever want to visit Bolivia, I'll need a visa, just as I would for many other countries.

Good to know. Not terribly sure what the problem is, though.

That list is the list of countries in the Visa Waiver Program. Canada has another agreement with the USA where it's easier to cross the border. From most countries (that's 150+) you need a visa to enter the USA as you do to most other countries from most other countries. That's the norm. I don't get what should make Bolivia special.
