I have a very odd problem - printer sharing will not turn off in system preferences. The box will not uncheck and pressing the STOP button does nothing. I upgraded to the latest version of CUPS some time ago.

That is odd...the check box and/or button aren't greyed out, are they? Is there maybe something in the print queue that would have to be cleared out first? Again, never heard of that before.

Can you start/stop other services like file sharing?

I think your most likely problem is that you upgraded the Apple version of CUPS with a non-Apple version.
