About 2 days ago, I turn on my computer and notice that the volume is extremely low ( I mean barely audible). I have checked the control panel and both the alert volume and main volume are set to max, but for some reason I am not getting the sound level I was before. I've run an internal Hardware Test with no errors reported and have tried restarting with extensions off with no success. Any ideas would be Greatly appreciated. By the way, I'm running 9.2 on an 800mhz G4 desktop.

if you are using external speakers....check the simplest thing, the plug. Sometimes i will have been fishing around with the cables behind the machine and i will accidentally pull out the minijack plug a little bit. it makes the volume in my speakers very distant sounding, and very very weak. :-D

Even without speakers, the volume is terribly low. I have tried reconnecting to my speakers and have checked all wiring, but it appears that the signal from the computer is too weak to power them. Could this be an issue with my sound card?

You can try plug the speaker directly to your Mac's audio-out port ... Or simply just pull out the card ...
Good Luck! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I have seen this a few times. Sounds like the sound pref is corrupted.
Trash your sound settings file(in the pref folder), then restart.
The problem should be fixed. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Good luck!
