I hate you! Actually, I hate AT&T for not covering the boonies...
Is Montana the ONLY state that has ZERO AT&T coverage? I know there are parts of others that don't, but I think we are the only second class state entirely.

Well, how's the form factor ? Is it a sleek, shiny, comfy in your hand and amazing in person as you thought it'd be ??

Huge image indeed. Congrats starman. It's pretty cool that you can use the slider to call out in an emergency during an update.

Ooooh, I'm jealous. Very cool Starman. I'm sitting in Tampa airport right now waiting for my flight to New York. The reason I didn't wait in line for one at the Tampa Apple Store is because I would have missed my flight. I get to the airport and my flight is almost 3 hours delayed.
I could've waited!
Hopefully they won't be sold out in New York.

So starman, when you bought it did they hassle you to buy the contract in store, or did they just let you purchase and go?

Got some!
Oh..wait...my bad!
I got mine a local AT&T store. Wound up getting there around 4:30 and was #19 in line. dunno how many finally lined up, had to be at least 60 or so. Took 30 minutes to get in the store and get out with da booty. Unboxed, plugged in, only to get this "your activation requires additional time to complete" message (yes, I had the pre-approved code I got at the store.) Lots of people having the same issue.

You CAN assign a ringtone to a person, it has to be one of the predefined ones, though

I drove by AT&T store at 2:30 and saw only 7 people so I got my chair out and stayed till the end. Hated those AT&T guys teasing us with iPhones through the window till 6:00 pm. Now had to download newer iTunes and going through the setup now. Little heavy but just about the same as 30Gig iPod.

If the phone is lying flat on a surface, I don't think rotating it will switch from portrait to landscape mode. Does it detect the movement, or is it gravitational? I mean, technically gravity doesn't change on either side if it's flat, right?

Just got home with mine. I was number 99 in line at 1:00 at the Apple Store in Nashville. There must have been close to 300 total when the doors opened.

congrats starman!
It looks like it takes a few minutes to get accustomed to typing/pressing it.
By the second mp4, you seem to have the hang of it. Sweet.

The keyboard. How is the typing experience? How is typing with two thumbs? How is the intelligence when you make mistakes? The form factor seems to be a given, but the keyboard. How is the touch screen?

Nope, it's not just Montana. There's also no AT&T service at all in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska, or Vermont. Also, there's a whole bunch of states that have some amount of coverage, but it's tiny. Basically, if you don't live in a big city, forget about AT&T, because you probably can't get it.
Here's a link to AT&T's Pay As You Go map, which corresponds pretty closely to their native coverage area (i.e. excluding all the roaming coverage): http://www.wireless.att.com/support_...payasyougo.gif

I grabbed the last 8 gigger in downtown Houston tonight. Un-boxing now. Kind of funny, two of the people right behind me were each visiting from other parts of the country, and sneaked away from family stuff to get in line this afternoon.
[edit] Going through activation process, which seems to be pretty quick. Done. 4 minutes in all, from when I connected the iPhone to my MacBook to having it activated via iTunes. Easy, easy, easy. This is quite a positive first experience.

Got one! Failed at AT&T (out of 8GB models), scored one later at an Apple Store.
However...

Got one. Unfortunately they ran out of the 8gb models just ahead of me, so I had to settle for a 4gb model. But I figure that either way I'll have to be very selective with what I put on there, since I have such a large music and video collection. I'm going to be posting a sort of blog about the iPhone including unboxing later tonight. BTW I typed all of this on the iPhone. Works pretty good.

I was 5th in line at the Tuttle Mall AT&T store at 2:30. Got my 8GB and was on my way by 6:15.
All I can say is this is Apple's best product ever.
The keyboard will take a bit of practice but it's kind of fun.

I'm posting from mine. I was first in line outside an AT&T store in Newport News, VA at 11:00 AM. This thing is even better than I hoped! The keyboard will take some practice just like others have said. Goodbye, Treo!

I can confirm it doesn't switch if lying flat on a table.

I'm waiting for the cell network to improve enough to allow Apple to bring video iChat to the iphone. For now, I'm very happy with my Treo and I use it as an ipod and video player already as well as all the other features of the iphone.
I really want one right now though!
I must try to wait until I have the true need and not just want.
This is going to be tough.

I don't have one yet but I've heard their activiation servers are getting slammed, that it can take up for 4 hours for the activiation to work.

So, I finally get home plug this thing in and iTunes tells me that "Your Activation requires more time." Now I get this e-mail saying It wont be up until 24Hrs from now. This is silly.... To wait in line to be the first to get one and I can't even use it until tomorrow....
This must be Verizon's fault..

Where in Columbus are you? I grew up in Grove City. My brother worked at a UDF near the Tuttle Mall. Our Greek father always called it the "Turtle Crossing Mall"

I read this today:
AT&T uses the same technology as Chinook Wireless, said Brian Moroney, Chinook's director of product and service marketing.
Chinook and AT&T phones both use small, removable chips called SIM cards. If an active Chinook SIM card were placed in an iPhone, the phone would work, assuming it's not locked from non-AT&T networks, Moroney said.
He added that he expects Apple and AT&T to make the phone available to Chinook customers at "some undisclosed date in the future," since Chinook is considered a regional partner of AT&T.
It sounds like it's just wishful thinking on the part of the Chinook guy, but who knows? It'll give us a chance to wait for iPhone v2. Or maybe v3.

It's actually A LOT easier than you might think. It's very intuitive and the error correction in pretty good.

GOT ONE!!
I haven't set mine up yet (waiting for my woman to get home so she can enjoy the unboxing with me ).
I waited for about 6 hours. I could've come even a couple hours later and gotten one. The weather was perfect. We got to use the Apple Store's WiFi on our laptops. Apple paid the local restaurants to bring us all free coffee, bottled water, pizza, cookies, etc. on a regular basis. You could even call and make special orders and they'd deliver to you in the line. Apple Store employees came out regularly to answer questions and see how everyone was doing. The people in line were all really cool, very interesting people. The time flew by.
Just before the doors opened, the employees came out cheering, getting the crowd all rowdy. We all did a countdown at 15 seconds. Once the doors opened it was like a big party. Loud music, cheering as people left the store with their iPhones. Very cool. Very fun. I would do it all over again, no question! I am very happy I was a part of this event.
Now to wait forever to for this thing to get activated. Then... !!!!

I already see that typing is going to take some time to get used to, it is getting better after some practice. My fingers just do not qute fit in those small places. I tried all fingers and definately the index finger is the quickest.

My local store had piles of them. No line whatsoever, but I went at 8pm.
I had to help them - looked like they had too many. They're now one 8GB model lighter (and so's my wallet).
I am, however, unable to use it at all until the activation and number transfer goes through. Can't even play with the non-phone stuff yet. Bummer.

VERY wishful thinking by the Chinook guy. They are partners with AT&T but their network is not the same. They don't even have a data network in MT.
I'm thinking it'd be possible, however, to get an iPhone through, say, my grandparent's address in CA, or my brother-in-law in Portland and not use data, but rely on wi-fi.
That's probably a good way to have a VERY expensive 8 GB iPod. LOL
I'm clinging to hope that AT&T will expand coverage due to the success of the iPhone. But I'd have to think a state with less than one million would be low priority.
To paraphrase the famous Bozeman saying about pay being low: "You can't eat the scenery," - "You can't iPhone the scenery, either.
