I'm getting a used iMac and it will not come with an Apple Remote. I kept my MacBook Apple Remote and I know that I can use it with the iMac, but I need to know if the MacBook Apple Remotes are magnetic so that I could attach it to the iMac for storage.

Thank you.

Neither my MacBook Pro remote, nor my Mid-2007 iMac remote is magnetic in any way. What sort of iMac are you getting?

The old Intel imacs where the Remote could latch to the side.

I don't know for sure, but I'd bet that it takes an iMac remote to magnetize to the side of the plastic case. I checked both my remotes with steel (they didn't stick) and a magnet (it didn't stick to them), so I have a feeling the previous iMacs had a special remote just to do that.

My MacBook's remote sticks to my MacBook in the upper corners of the screen. The remote may not have a magnet, but my MacBook does.

Indeed.

I stick my remote to my left macbook bezel all the time.

Before getting my MB, I did that to the remote in a MAc store (Not an actual Apple store, but they only sell Apple/accessories.)

The salesperson was very much surprised!

It's not a common thing for people to know that the MB can hold a remote the same way an iMac can. I like it.

I thought it would be weird for them to make special remotes for the iMac, but then why will my remote stick neither to my fridge, or a magnet? If it had a magnet in it, it would stick to the fridge, and if it had metal for the iMac to attach to, a magnet would attach to it.

I don't still have my MacBook to test, unfortunately.

On the new iMac, the remote does stick to the imac, on the bottom right of the screen.

The remote isn't magnetic. Just metallic. Which would be why it only sticks to certain things. The magnet part is in the computer. And only certain ones. It's not a magnet remote, it's a magnet computer.

The reason it sticks to the new iMac only on the front is because that's where the magnets that hold the glass on the screen are.

In the old iMac there was a magnet on the side along the side.

And on the MacBooks, you can place it on the top left or right. Which is where the screen latch magnets are.

So to sum it up. Remote = Metal piece. Computer = Magnet somewhere inside.. maybe.

I know that, but that's why I ask why it won't stick to a fridge magnet.

Ok, in spite of the fact that I couldn't get a magnet to be attracted to my iMac remote, nor detect a magnet in the case, I finally do have mine sticking to the screen. And now I remember that the glass over the display has a series of magnets around it that hold it in...

It turns out that my MBP remote ALSO sticks to the screen on my new iMac...

I should point out that the hold is fairly weak-when I tried initially, my iMac remote still had the plastic wrapper on it. Now generally speaking, such a thin layer of plastic shouldn't impact whether you detect a magnetic attraction or not, but this is again a very weak magnet we're talking about.

Learn something astoundingly new every day...

From my understanding, The Apple Remote is just metal. I didn't get one with my imac c2d, so I just put random stuff on the side, like money and junk.

I'm sorry to inform people that like my "money and junk" use, but I got a macbook yesterday, so it's now either holding my apple remote or my magsafe to keep it on my desk.

UPDATE: There is also a magnet imbedded in the screen's frame on the left hand side right in the middle. Not just at the top left and right corners.

The magnet at the middle left is pretty weak. If you just tap your macbook it falls off.

I think the remote sticks to computers through magnetism.

*sigh*

Mac = Magnet embedded somewhere inside.

Remote = Metal piece inside.

Mac magnet + Remote metal = Stick

The end.

Also, it won't stick to really weak fridge magnets because they're weak. Too weak. But it will stick to a strong enough magnet.

No magic. No Pikmins. No special RDF.

Searching --> confusion --> discussion --> resolution --> (optional bickering) --> joshing --> boredom. We've pretty much skipped the bickering and gone straight to joshing. That's our style.
