I finally got around to doing some maintience on my Mac Mini Intel Core Duo 1.66

I upgraded the ram to 2GB
wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything

I keep my home folder on an external 500GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive.. Replaced a 200GB Diamondmax..

With everything the mini seems like 100x faster than it ever did before..

Any other tips i can use to keep this thing running optimally

Ram lover..

Hehe .. There isn't much else you can do to quicken it up, I don't think. Maybe the next time you upgrade your storage, go with a 10k RPM FireWire drive to access your home folder. Might make load times a bit quicker.

Enjoy!

It would be even faster if you had the home folder on the internal drive or FireWire. Get a nice 7200 RPM internal HD.

Yeah im looking at migrating to an external firewire drive enclosure
As far as HD sizes go.. theres no way I could keep my home folder on an internal drive.. its over 300gb so far... They dont make an internal drive for the mini thats large enough for me..

Also Parallels runs vista excellent with the 2GB Of RAM

How can you keep your folder or migrate it to an external drive?

You could consider running your OS and apps from the inernal drive and storing all your files on a Firewire. That'd probably speed things up a good bit. You don't have to store all your files in your user folder if you don't want to. The only problem would be if it's a multiple-account machine, and you've got files you don't want other users being able to see/accidentally delete, etc.
