I am interested in doing some 5.1 mixing in Soundtrack Pro 2, but I currently do not have any audio hardware. I am interested in knowing if I need to purchase an audio interface like Presonus' FIREBOX or if I can just run to Fry's and pick up a cheap 5.1 receiver and connect it via SPDIF. I just bought Final Cut Studio 2, so I'd prefer not having to shell out another $500-600 to be able to do this. Does Soundtrack require a Firewire device or just any piece of hardware that supports 5.1?
When birds fly in the right formation, they need only exert half the effort. Even in nature, teamwork results in collective laziness.

Soundtrack Pro will use the default system audio output that is selected in System Preferences. If you have a 5.1 receiver connected, you should be fine to use that as an output device in STP2.
I gotta have more cowbell.
