Currently, it is both impossible to have the phone in an unlocked state upon upgrading to 1.1.1, and there is no known way of downgrading. The hacking and development teams will be working a lot over the next few days, and hopefully some sort of solution can be reached, but for the time being, you're stuck with 1.1.1.

Smart move to update it when everyone including Apple told you that it would re-lock the phone or even worse.

Reports are that people who used iPhoneSIMFree are able to re-activate their phones, provided they have a valid AT&T SIM card, though not re-unlock them (no jailbreak yet). I've yet to see confirmation on this; however, it looks like this method leaves your IMEI intact, so there's hope.

But, people who used anySIM seem to have a messed up IMEI number (004999010640000) that's preventing the phone from seeing any SIM - even the original one that shipped with the phone - as valid. While the phones are still technically functional, they refuse to even activate - effectively bricking them, at least until a fix is found.

The problem with the anySIM method seems to be in line with their own re-locking methods. As of yet, there's no known way to fix this.

Seriously. Is this worth the hassle of changing phone services or waiting until it's properly released in your country?

Just wait.
Cause then you get all the updates with out any hassles, full support from Apple if something goes wrong, and no headaches.

Unlocking it might be worth it if:

- you travel regularly and want to use another carrier's SIM somewhere else
- you want to move countries/carriers for good part-way through your contract
- you live somewhere that the iPhones won't get to (perhaps ever)
- < space for other things I haven't thought of >

But people are using the iPhone, that in no way was meant to be unlocked. That's the deal. Apple never said they were going to provide unlocks, nor did AT&T. If you get pissed because it got bricked, well, that's your own damn fault.

Bottom line - until someone figures out how to re-unlock 1.1.1, iPhone users who desire an unlocked and functional device should not update. Period. Or just wait until its released in the UK in November in all its 1.1.1 firmware glory.

Do you laugh when a friend gets hit by a bus because he should have looked both ways?

That's hardly an analogous comparison.... no, actually, not at all.

Well, apparently you can force a downgrade to 1.0.2, but I donno if the unlock still works.

I doubt they'll be an unlock for 1.1.1 and later, as the method relied on a security hole in the system software that has undoubtedly been patched.

Not as yet, the downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 still leaves you without the phone function for now.
