Hold down the left mouse button (or the only mouse button on the MacBook) when the machine is booting up, that will force it to eject.
Signature depreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but does anyone know how to fix my drive? or somehow let the macbook know there's a drive in there!

Check System Profiler (ATA or Disk Burning categories) to see if your machine even sees the drive. If you don't see the optical drive listed in those categories, you may have a dead optical drive or a bad optical drive cable. If you're still under warranty, take it to an Apple store for a free fix.

FWIW, like the poster I realized my macbook (may 2006) DVD-R drive was borked when I went to install Leopard.

System Profiler sees it but it can't read any media.

Wonder if there are high fail rates for these. The drive is a matsushita uj-857.

Argh - I see the problem now and it's not hardware. Parallels was running at the CD/DVD drive was enabled. Win XP was trying to open the DVD, not OS X.

If I tell Win XP to ignore CDs or DVDs OS X opens it.
