When using Time Machine to back up to a Time Capsule or other TC-connected drive, the backup is created as a sparse disk image. When backing up to a USB-connected drive, the backup is created using regular files.

What is the purpose of using a sparse image versus individual files? I would think that having your backup as one multi-GB file is a bad idea.

Probably an issue with network protocols; easier to only let the network protocol see one file and mount it locally as a disk.
