Interesting emotional songs that make those feelings and tears well up from deep inside.

1. The Space Race is Over - Billy Bragg
2. Dance Called America - Runrig
3. Jwanasibeki - Juluka
4. Bitter to the South - Bhundu Boys
5. Clouds - Joni Mitchell

To me these are songs with a human tale to tell. The Billy Bragg one is a lament for the lost opportunity of the moon landings and the narrowing of the horizon of human achievement. Dance called America is a lament for a lost people, forcibly removed from the highlands and resettled in America. Jwanasibeki is a tale of miners and struggle in apartheid South Africa that also celibrates the strength of the human soul and Clouds is just plain beautiful. Bitter to the South reminds me that the plight of Africa is more to do with our own actions than those of Africans themselves.

None of these songs are related to a specific person or event in my live they just help me think about what and why.

Why are the grown men and women crying? Can't they get out of the room or turn the Billy Bragg down/off or something?

I've only ever heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Clouds." I think it's interesting that a song from 1969 is included with a list of songs that can't be more than a few years old... Joni sure does pull the heart strings with that one.

Maybe they're locked inside and can't turn the music off?

I can't think of any songs like this right now.

Apart from Clouds, the Billy Bragg and Runrig ones are mid 80's. The Juluka one is late 70's

It always brings me back when I hear Ooh Child
From the Hudson River out to the Nile
I run the marathon just up until the very last mile
Well if you battle me I will revile
People always say my style is wild
You've got gall you've got guile guile
To step to me I'm a rapophile
If you want to battle you're in denial
Coming from Uranus to check my style
Go ahead put my rhymes on trial
Cast you off into exile

I can't really think of a song that makes me cry. The death of Fry's dog in Futurama made me cry (seriously), but that doesn't really count because it was the imagery plus the music that did it to me. I cried over a foreign national anthem once, if that counts.

Nine While Nine - Sisters Of Mercy.

Apparently the singer can't do this song live because he cries like a baby every time he hears it.

And it's passing strange
And I'm waiting for the train
Caught up on this line again
And it's passing slowly
Killing time but it's
Better than living in what will come and I've
Still got some of your letters with me and I
Thought sometimes or I read too much
And I think you know let's
Drink to the dead lying under the water and the
Cost of the blood on the driven snow and the
Lipstick on my cigarettes
Frost upon the window pane
Nine while nine and I'm waiting
For the train.....

She said do you remember a time when angels
Do you remember a time when fear
In the days when I was stronger
In the days when you were here she said
When days had no beginning
While days had no end when
Shadows grew no longer I
Knew no other friend but you
Were wild
You were wild.....

Frost upon these cigarettes
Lipstick on the window pane and I've
Lost all sense of the world outside but I
Can't forget so I call your name and I'm
Looking for a life for me and I'm
Looking for a life for you and I'm
Talking to myself again and it's
So damn cold it's just not true and I'm
Walking through the rain
Trying to hold on waiting for the train and I'm
Only looking for what you want but it's
Lonely here and I think you knew and I'm
And I'm waiting
And I wait in vain
Nine while nine and I'm waiting
For the train.....
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

I didn't cry but that is damn near the most depressing ending to a comedy show I've ever seen. I still change the channel once they cut to the final scene, or at least I would if it was still on cartoon Network.

Sorry, but I guess that shows how out of it I am-I've been listening to popular music intentionally since the late 1960s, and I still never heard of them.

Tears in Heaven makes me cry, though, especially since I know the story behind it.

Yeah, I switch it off too. But at least Seymour made a great comeback in the film.

Futurama was an odd cartoon show. Aside from its scientifically nerdy and/or dry sense of humor, the writers seemed to exhibit an atypical sentimentality (The Sting comes to mind).

The bolded parts of these songs tear me up. If I sing along with the songs I choke up.

"Praise You in This Storm" - Casting Crowns

words by Mark Hall/music by Mark Hall and Bernie Herms

I was sure by now,God, that You would have reached down
and wiped our tears away,
stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say amen
and it's still raining
as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain,
"I'm with you"
and as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
the God who gives and takes away.

Chorus:
And I'll praise you in this storm
and I will lift my hands
for You are who You are
no matter where I am
and every tear I've cried
You hold in your hand
You never left my side
and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to You
and raised me up again
my strength is almost gone how can I carry on
if I can't find You
and as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
and as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
the God who gives and takes away

Chorus

I lift my eyes onto the hills
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth
I lift my eyes onto the hills
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth
"Oh My God" - Jars of Clay

Oh my God, look around this place,
Your fingers reach around the bone,
you set the break and set the tone
For flights of grace, and future falls
In present pain all fools say, "Oh my God."

Oh my God, why are we so afraid?
we make it worse when we don't bleed,
there is no cure for our disease.
Turn a phrase and rise again,
or fake your death and only tell your closest friends,
Oh My God.

Oh my God, can I complain?
You take away my firm belief and graft my soul upon your grief.
Weddings, boats, and alibis,
All drift away, and a mother cries...

Liars and fools, sons and failures, theives will always say..
Lost and found, ailing wanderers, healers always say..
Whores and angels, men with problems, leavers always say..
Broken hearted, separated, orphans always say..
War creators, racial haters, preachers always say..
Distant fathers, fallen warriors, givers always say..
Pilgrim saints, lonely widows, users always say..
Fearful mothers, watchful doubters, Saviors always say..

Sometimes I can not forgive
and these days mercy cuts so deep,
If the world was how it should be, maybe I could get some sleep.
While I lay, I'd dream we're better, scales were gone and faces lighter,
When we wake we hate our brother, we still move to hurt each other,
Sometimes I can close my eyes and all the fear the keeps me silent,
Falls below my heavy breathing, what makes me so badly bent?
We all have a chance to murder, we all have the need for wonder.
We still want to be reminded that the pain is worth the plunder.

Sometimes when I lose my grip, I wonder what to make of heaven,
All the times I thought to reach up, all the times I had to give up.
Babies underneath their beds, in hospitals that cannot treat them.
All the wounds that money causes, all the comforts of cathedrals,
All the cries of thirsty children, this is our inheritance,
All the rage of watching mothers, this is our greatest offense

Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God

I choke-up on the chorus when i do this on live sometimes:

"Cry In My Heart"

There's a cry in my heart for Your glory to fall
For Your presence to fill up my senses
There's a yearning again, a thirst for discipline
A hunger for things that are deeper

Could You take me beyond?
Could You carry me through?
If I open my heart, could I go there with You?

For what do I have if I don't have You, Jesus?
What in this life could mean any more?
You are my rock, You are my glory
You are the lifter of my head*

* Making reference to Psalms 3.
"Everything's so clear to me now: I'm the keeper of the cheese and you're the lemon merchant. Get it? And he knows it.
That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

Gloomy Sunday, perhaps? Certainly depressing enough.

Only song that’s ever actually made me cry (and this was when I was about 10) is In This Life by Madonna (!), because it reminded me of my mum. Music can do lots of strange and sometimes uncomfortable things to me, but crying is not usually one of them.

That's not really sad, just depressing. I don't think it makes you want to cry so much as hang yourself.

I wouldn’t know, as I’ve never actually tried, but wouldn’t it be rather a logical thing to do to shed a tear or two whilst preparing to hang oneself?

Górecki's Third Symphony, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.”

If this piece does not make you cry, there is something wrong with you.

Charles Aznavour - Yesterday when I was young

YouTube - Yesterday Charles Aznavour

Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame

The thousand dreams I dreamed
The splendid things I planned I always built, alas
On weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away

Yesterday when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung
So many wayward pleasures layed in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see

I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall concerned itself with me
And nothing else at all

Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play

There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay
For Yesterday When I was young...

There is only one song which could possibly make true men shed a tear:

When sun rays crown thy pine clad hills,
And summer spreads her hand,
When silvern voices tune thy rills,
We love thee, smiling land.
We love thee, we love thee,
We love thee, smiling land.

When spreads thy cloak of shimmering white,
At winter's stern command,
Thro' shortened day, and starlit night,
We love thee, frozen land.
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee, frozen land.

As blinding storm gusts fret thy shore,
And wild waves lash thy strand,
Thro' spindrift swirl, and tempest roar,
We love thee windswept land.
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee windswept land.

As loved our fathers, so we love,
Where once they stood, we stand;
Their prayer we raise to Heaven above,
God guard thee, Newfoundland
God guard thee, God guard thee,
God guard thee, Newfoundland.
Mankind's only chance is to harness the power of stupid.

"Imagine" by John Lennon.

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Please excuse me for saying so, but I get very peeved and feel great frustration when I think about how people mindlessly accept the ideas in this song as though they provide genuine clues to a magical pathway which might allow us to reach Nirvana.

'Tisn't so.

And that makes me cry.

It makes me cry that John Lennon wasn't smart enough to leave us practical and helpful lessons rather than sending us off on an endless search that hurts us more than it helps.
