This is for when you do the FireWire Target Mode while setting up a new Mac.
Will you need to re-activate CS3 or will it automatically transfer and will the original computer remain activated so that both have CS3? Thanks in advance.

I suspect you'll need to reactivate it since the license is one desktop and one laptop. I'm sure Adobe will require it otherwise, people will be visiting their friends house and use migration assistent to pirate software.

You will have to de-activate it on the old computer and re-activate it on the new.

This may be a silly question, but does the application installer know if you're on a laptop or desktop? I have two laptops that I want to install CS3 on, but no desktop. I understand I'm not supposed to use them at the same time, but if my "desktop" is really a second laptop, does it matter?
Also, I have InDesign CS1, Illustrator CS1 and Photoshop 7. The best price Adobe will give me (last time I checked) was $795 or $895. Does anyone know if I need to keep hanging on to those old CDs and/or serial numbers, or does this particular upgrade start with a fresh new serial number?

I have no idea if the installer knows if its a laptop or not, I suspect not, but it gives you only two activations and assumes that its a desktop/laptop. To be honest since I only use a laptop I haven't really delved into the details.
I usually hold on to the prior disks/serial numbers when upgrading. I went from CS1 to CS3 to I made sure I kept the CS1 serial numbers handy. CS3 has a new serial number but upgrading, you'll be prompted for the media or the serial number of a prior release.
