Was he ever funny?
I remember hating him when he was the white guy on In Living Color. And I think I was in 8th grade at the time.
EDIT Nope, I was in 10th grade.

Loved him in The Mask, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar, Batman, Bruce Almighty, The Grinch, Series of Unfortunate Events, Dick and Jane, Number 23 and Eternal Sunshine. I hear he was good at Me, Myself and Irene, but I haven't watched it yet.

The problem I see is that he appears to be getting typecast. This new film looks like a variant of Liar, Liar.

I don't think I've ever liked him in a comedy, but Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was fantastic, and I was really impressed that he didn't in any way ruin it.

He’s a really good actor. Shame his comedy is so over-the-top it’s rarely funny.

while some of his movies don't do it for me i must say that Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar, and Ace Ventura are some of my favorite comedies.

But he's an "actor" not just a "comedian." He got lots of good reviews for "Eternal Sunshine" and even the relatively serious parts of his funny movies have been quite good. Saying "he's not funny" is typecasting him.

I like some of his "In Living Color" stuff and some of his older movies. The newer stuff has left me scratching my head. I've really not found him funny for some time and as already noted, Yes Man looks like a rehash of Liar Liar.

I am struggling with how to really say this, but do people in general know you are gay unless you tell them?
There is certainly a way a majority of gay people try to act, and you just don't come off that way. Call me the gay-stereotyping equivalent of racism, but most "gay-acting" people annoy me. You don't do that. Perhaps that's why you aren't obsessed with who slept with who. You aren't obsessed with gossiping about celebrities.
Or maybe you totally are and I missed it.

No, you’re absolutely right—I don’t care. Those idiotic tabloids that spend all their time, a shitload of paper, and even more money on broadcasting who slept with whom, who wore what, and things like that—they annoy me to no end.
I was sort of more trying to imply that if a Canadian is ‘too far away’ and shouldn’t logically be in the know about these things, then a Dane should certainly be considered living under a rock the size of Uluru. Which is true, really.

Notice how you never see Jim Carey and Steve Martin together at the same time. My theory is once he realised he was trapped in shite movie hell Steve Martin created Jim Carey (like Mrs Doubtfire but without the foam boobs). For a while (Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber) things were fine and he was funny, but now it's gone all runny again.
JC was bowel looseningly bad in Batman, and he's just got worse since then. The Trueman show was nearly OK but really, 20 mill a pop?

Jim actually hit the nail on the head in Batman. He channeled Frank Gorshin to a tee and then went beyond, making his Riddler a really psychotic bad guy. And considering that particular movie was intended to be kiddie comics stuff, it was a pretty good flick. Not up with the first Batman with Michael Keaton, but for what they were doing, it was good. For what it's worth, Tommy Lee Jones was great as Two Face, too.
It's all about assuming a character, not just being the same person all the time and reading off different lines. Jim ACTS, and I think he does a good job of it, especially considering the material he chooses and the directors he works with.

I think Carrey did exactly what Joel Schumacher wanted in Batman Forever, so I can't really blame him. The problem was just that Joel Schumacher seems to have been sniffing glue. That film was awful just in general, and the performances just kept the tone even. (Alicia Silverstone in Batman & Robin, however, was just inexcusable.)

I thought Me, Myself and Irene was very entertaining, and some of his others were pretty good as well, thus he should keep going. There are certainly far worse actors out there making a buck. This thread made me think of Will Farrell. I haven't seen one movie where I thought he was at all funny. I don't even like watching trailers of his current films, but he has to have something or he would have the following he does, or demand the big figures he does(though Nicole Kidman shows big fees do not translate into big draws).

The quickest way to convince me to miss a movie is to tell me Jim Carey is in it.
His best performance, imho, was definitely "Eternal Sunshine...", but I put that accomplishment more to Gondry's abiity as a director and the overall strength of the story and production itself, rather than anything Carey did. I suspect the movie would have easily been as good with someone else in the part.

Doing Time on Maple Drive? I personally thought that was his best performance.

Um cuz they film a shitload of movies in Toronto and near my house, work and 80% of my friends are actors as I went to an arts high school so that's where I met them. My sister is also a makeup artist for movies, ads etc and her ex did lighting for films.
My best friend is a comedian in commercials ads, TV shows and has some hit on youtube.
