Some of you may have seen the CNN holographic reporter.

How does it work? I know there are a bunch of cameras at her end forming the 3D image, but does Blitzer actually see her on the stage? If so, how is it projected there?

It's a pretty lame, useless gimmick, imo. And the fake Star Wars effect is just ridiculous.

If Wolf Blitzer and the studio audience can actually see her 3D form, I don't see it as a lame at all. Gimmick, yes, but it will be very interesting as the technology matures.

Now, if it's just a video overlay for the broadcast, then yeah, it's lame.

Pretty sure he's just pretending to see her, in the same way that weather reporters pretend to see the weather maps they're pointing to.

Green tent, 35 hd cameras, video stream demultiplexing (to match local camera view angle), color keying, microwave and regular video composition.
I don't believe that any human saw Jessica on the stage with their own eyes. The effect is only for TV viewers.

Is that fake, or is it very immature tech? Sometimes you see that in those cheap green screen overlays for low budget kids' TV shows.

The aspect ratio distortion is bad though. Or does she just look like a gnome in real life?

OK then, I agree that's lame.

you don't seriously think Blitzer can see her do you?

I love the way they try to sell their little gimiicky trick instead of talking about the news. I know why I don't watch cable...

Well, they did say hologram, which is why I wondered.

A video overlay is not what I consider a hologram.

When Yellin first appeared, Blitzer pointed out how great it is, because he could talk to her without the distraction of what's going on around her.

That's the BLOODY POINT of having a reporter at the scene. CONTEXT.

What a crock. This is the worst hyped tech since the cue:cat.

I think they called it a holograph instead of a plain overlay because she was in 3D instead of 2D. I don't consider this to be a hologram at all, but it is more complicated than a green screen used for the weather.

My first thought when I saw it was CNN has now jumped the shark.

My guess is they were originally going to use the technology to teleport someone into the studio, but since they couldn't figure out how to remove the chroma artifact left around the subject they decided to call it a hologram. Wolf accidentally said she was being "beamed" into the studio because that was the original intention. Very lame gimmick indeed being called a hologram. It was defiantly awkward to me when he was acting like he could really see her. It just feels wrong for reporters to lie about what they are seeing.

I thought I remember the camera circling her. Maybe I'm not remembering it right and giving them more credit than they deserve.

I was hoping that maybe a fly would have gotten into the hologram machine and Wolf Blizter would get his hand vomited off by a half-fly/half-human monstrosity.

That would be news.

If this were a viable technology, porn would be using it already.

We really do live in the future. We have a black president and holographic news reporters.

It would have been so much better if these holograms had a big H on their foreheads.

She could have been projected onto the stage with blitzer with 3 or 4 projectors, but I don't believe they did this.

Also, if you're bringing the holograms, I'm gonna need someone to bring up a pic of kryten or the cat.

Even after jumping the shark, CNN will keep enjoying the increasing viewership of couch potatoes worldwide.

My hunch is that the halo is very deliberate. We've been able to successfully chroma-key without halos for years. All this "hologram" nonsense is is chroma-keying from many angles at once and matching up the right angles in the remote and local studios. It's really just a chroma-keyed version of the "3D" stop-motion used at some Super Bowl a while back. You could also call it a real-time version of the Matrix effect.
