...but that's not the sad part.
This sign is what's the real tragedy here:
I mean, really. I was under the impression that Brits had a slightly better grasp on the English language than your average American...

The show's best dancers won over the show's best singer. Given the considerable difference in market cap for singers and dancers, Boyle will definitely be more successful than Diversity.
However, none of these two have differentiated themselves enough within their genres to become more than one-hit wonders. Perhaps high value production and mass marketing will come to the rescue?
On the other hand, with acting classes, a Julie-Andrews-style musical would draw me to the theater, and maybe even buy the Bluray.

My wife and I were rooting for Aidan Davis. We knew he didn't have much of a shot though, since there's no way another small, young, uber-talented dancer would win two years in a row.

...except that English-speaking folk used to remember this very basic rule.
Thanks to a combination of MySpace, TV addiction, and a general decline in reading books, people are getting dumber - particularly when it comes to grammar and spelling.
Remembering that "your" is possessive and "you're" is a contraction is pretty damn easy.
Same goes for people putting apostrophes in front of every damn "s" they see. Who the hell started that trend?

Is this the point in the thread where I point out that quotes weren't used around the title of the TV show?

Wait...Salty's gay? I guess if I go back and look at his previous posts, I can kind of see it. It's kind of like finding out that Bruce Willis was really a ghost.

If only there was some computerized mechanism that would look at each word you type and ensure that it's spelled correctly. That'd sure be nice.

Indeed I can press buttons, and then letters appear on this screen. I can even send an internet to my secretary it might take a few days for her to get it, but golly gee is it convenient!

Talking about Frodo's Mom, she threw a bit of a wobbly when she didn't win.
Britain's Got Talent bosses face probe over Susan Boyle's 'emotional breakdown' | Mail Online
A police spokeswoman said: 'We were called about 6pm on Sunday to a central London hotel to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act.
'Police attended at the request of ambulance personnel and the woman was taken voluntarily to a clinic. No one was arrested and there were no allegations of crime.'

"tian" is pronounced "shan" or "chan".
English-speaking folk used to remember this very basic rule.
Thanks to a combination of MySpace, TV addiction, and a general decline in reading books, people are getting dumber - particularly when it comes to grammar and spelling.
If it had simply been a slip - like most of the your/you're errors would seem to be - it wouldn't be a problem, even given your earlier post.
But admitting it was plain ignorance makes you look like a total lugnut, shif.

I've never actually watched this show (or any other reality/talent show, come to think of it), just caught a clip or two on youtube, but my impression from the coverage of this Boyle woman is that people are amazed that she can sing so well while being somewhat unattractive. Do I have that right? If so, I find that rather sad and pathetic.

For the moment, yes, but Paul Potts has gone one to record several CDs, which have sold millions of copies in Europe. Besides, she didn't really "lose" anything; she finished in second place, and if she doesn't go bonkers over the publicity, she could still have a recording contract waiting for her.

That's the sad and pathetic truth, and it applies equally to Paul Potts.
This voyeuristic truth is masked by the marketing angle that these amazing talents have been slumbering unrecognized in unlikely spots.
Which of course, has long been exposed as utter marketing bullshit, since both Potts and Boyle have had formal training, and have been involved in "amateur" or semi-professional performance for quite some years.

Now was that the gentleman from a couple of years back where everyone was so pleasantly surprised that a dumpy and generally unattractive man had such a beautiful voice? There seems to be a trend here that makes me loathe these shows all the more. When the hell did someone's looks become the measure of their vocal talent? Before the age of skanky little pop divas, there were a great many fantastic signers that weren't what one would generally describe as pretty.

Celine Dion comes to mind.
I mean, they make her up pretty well for her album covers and photo shoots and stuff, but you gotta admit...she's got a horse-face.

That would be him, and you are correct about that trend. Many people live their lives vicariously through TV.

Given that with today's photo editing technology it is possible to take a picture of a golden retriever and turn it into Nicole Kidman, looking good on your album cover is hardly proof of beauty.
Take Beyonce, for instance. Looks great in her music videos, but when you see her interviewed on live TV you realize she has what in the entertainment industry they call, "a face for radio."

That's what it looked like to me when it hit a few weeks ago. Here's someone who looks like a normal person who can sing. Wow. Lots of normal people can sing really well when they want to, and when they practice enough. I applaud her gift, which is truly amazing, but the whole thing is sickening.
