Surprised the heck out of me. I drove up to see whether they could hook my wife up with a current iPhone today, and the store is closed. Not just closed, the windows are all covered with black paper, and signs in the windows say they're "bringing you a better store" when they reopen.
Anyone else have their stores closed today?

The Seattle one was closed last year. They're expanding all the stores to deal with traffic, and redoing some of them to be flagship stores.

Also note that when it reopens, it won't be done. The first closure is to prepare the store for remodeling. They create a smaller store within the original store. This way they can minimize downtime and work on the remodel while the store is open. They then close the store again near the end to remove the temporary inner store and finish up.

I seem to remember the one at Woodfield Mall was closed for a remodel last month when I was there. I can't be positive since I wasn't going there for that reason and I didn't try to pop in.

They did the same thing in Toronto. Closed up, opened a mini store, renovated and opened up again when all was done.

They are not expanding all the stores. Some of the older stores are going to get remodels. A flagship store is such because it's based on volume; a store doesn't become one just because they hope it will do more business. The flagship stores are those in places like NYC, Chicago, and a very few select large cities. Some of the stores that will be remodeled, that already do much more sales volume than an average store won't, even get extra square footage; they're just updating the looks to match the newer stores.

Also not necessarily true. It depends on the store. The one near me is scheduled to close for a remodel sometime this year, and it will shut completely down for about a month, and then reopen when the remodel is done.

Is it La Cantera or North Star that's closed?

Personally I'm hoping my new Apple store will be able to transform into a large robot and crush local PC retailers while making witty quips.

La Cantera. I don't go to North Star if I can avoid it-the whole 410-San Pedro traffic thing is way too nasty to deal with, even before you get to the parking issues there. Plus I live near Sea World, so it's easy to just get on 1604 (outside of rush hours, of course!) and get to La Cantera quickly.

La Cantera is a straight shot out I-10 for us, and we like both the Rim and La Cantera, but I do feel a little aquifer recharge zone guilt. We're definitely inside 410 people most of the time. The 410/San Pedro stretch is tons better since they redid it, but I haven't been to North Star in ages either.
