Oh, just for fun, I believe if you bought a 120 GB HD and Wireless adaptor from MS< that'd cost more than the Arcade SKU.
That's ****ed up.

Yeah, I'm usually all "charge as much as you want, free market rah rah rah," but Microsoft's necessary-peripheral prices are straight-up retarded.
Although a smaller hard drive and a third-party wireless adapter are much more reasonable.

Seriously. You could get at least 8 Sony PS3 Slim plastic stands for that amount.

Because a small selection of inferior ports is good for the soul?
Anyway, you're talking about the company that tried to price its system in a range not seen since the 3DO and only managed to get it anywhere near the realm of relative sanity by cutting one of its key features (total compatibility).

Yeah, if you don't know how to use Google.
120GB Hard Drive - $63
Wireless Adapter - $49 (Ok, so it's refurbished but I've seen new ones go for $60.)

So am I the only one laughing that MS is talking about how it was a good move to go down to two SKUs, only for what appears to be a new third SKU, the "Super Elite", showing up in Europe?

With nowhere else to post this i turn here...
Anyone who was a Metroid fan (old school type), you owe it to yourself to download "Shadow Complex" for XBLA (fatty i think we've had many a discussion about metroid). Out of bordem i downloaded it today after reading a few reviews and found that it is an amazing modern day take on the classic super metroid formula. I'm shocked with the similarities to one of my favorite games of all time, its a great download and anyone who says they are a metroid fan MUST play it.

The point is meaningless, however. Unless you're telling me you'd pick a console version based on one point.
I'm also be curious about these "lower rankings" for the crappy ports. Ghostbusters, which probably was one of the more vile ports (graphically) boasts a two-point lower ranking on meta-critic. That's next to nothing.

FYI, the new update apparently boosts the resolution on the PS3. I'm not sure if it can still be classified as vile.

First off, I've corrected the scores to metacritic so as to eliminate (or minimize) the possibility of one site's bias.
Second, you have two real crap ports here: FEAR and Orange Box. One was released at the beginning of the PS3s lifetime and the other was likely a quick and dirty port. This isn't a real trend though, its appears to be an exception.
Third, you never answered: "The point is meaningless, however. Unless you're telling me you'd pick a console version based on one point." We can spread that at to two or three points but the core of my question remains.
So what is the point you're trying to make here? The PS3 is a superior system because it has a slight score advantage overall in-spite of a slight score disadvantage in general on third party titles?

Cross-platform have a nasty habit of being an inferior product on the PS3, most likely due to developers not taking the time or effort to iron out any issues with these titles. If the PS3 is basically getting ports of 360 titles, it's also stagnating this console generation's development, especially since the 360 has pretty much been maxed out, while development for the PS3's still has room for improvement.
But to answer your question, my main point is this: the 360 is either getting a larger number of crappier games, or the PS3 is edging them out in the quality of their exclusives. They just need to gain enough of a comparable user base so that companies have incentive to stop putting out sloppy ports.
Also, it gets me POed that Sony gets sloppy seconds.

You should be pissed off — at Sony, for selling out your game system in order to win the HD format war. The Playstation 3 should have dominated this generation, but Sony wanted to make a compelling Blu-ray player rather than a good video game system.

Wow, you really are married to Sony now aren't you? You know why the PS3 gets "sloppy seconds"? Because the ****ers had to make the thing even harder to develop for the the PS2. So you can thank Sony for that. Another reason they get "sloppy seconds"? Because they have the smallest install base. You can thank Sony for that too, thanks to their ridiculous starting price point (or poor first-party strategy).
Aside from that I still think you're completely overblowing the quality of the ports ( and you still haven't clarified if you'd buy a 360 version over a PS3 version just because of a difference of 1 or 2 points on the review score). God knows when the original XBOX was getting the shinier versions of games (GameCube, too), I wasn't whining about it.
Accept the consequences for your console choice. It's really not that big of a deal. Aside from the Orange Box (if you have it) I have a hard time believing any of this has actually impacted you gaming experience in any significant way. And if it has (which it hasn't) you made that conscious decision (and compromise) when you decided Blu-Ray was an important feature.

Oh, I've accepted it. I haven't considered selling my PS3 since I first bought it (unless my memory is vague). The 360 would've been supplemental.
The PS3 was originally overpriced and yes, they made it a beast to develop for. They probably deserve to be in third, but the technology, for all its faults, isn't being done justice by third-parties at the moment. IF that changes, it could change the perception of the PS3 overall.
As for my personal gaming experience, the Orange Box was the only game I've played that really frustrated the crap out of me and made me feel like I was getting a vastly inferior product. It wouldn't have been as big a deal if I'd played Half-Life 2 when it was originally released. The Orange Box was my first experience with the game.
At this point, it's not about justification for me. It's purely speculation of the gaming industry.
All that being said, The Dark Knight looks darn good in 1080p. I'm just saying.

Well, you haven't quite accepted that you either need to buy a 360 or have some patience to get everything you want from the gaming side of things.

This is still 90% Sony's fault. And yes, it will change, because the hardware is more powerful and because each new title released is one more game's worth of development experience under someone's belt.
They've planned a 10 year life span for it. If the perception doesn't change (and that seems about 1% likely) it will be thanks to one of the dumbest hardware strategies of all time.

Well, I'd say 1 point of difference in a review isn't worth speculating over. Game sales (or attach rate), sure.

You know what else third parties never gave a fair shake to? The 3DO. That was for pretty much the same reason as the PS3 — with a market of something like 12 people, it was unlikely that making games for this powerful hardware would be a profitable endeavor. The PS3 will be done justice by third parties when there's some financial incentive to make up for the ridiculous cost of doing so.
I'm thinking the Slim will help Sony's case here, but it's probably too late to take the market like they could have with an affordable model at launch.

I'm not willing to count Sony out quite yet. They now have hardware that's an excellent value, while MS still has the stigma of hardware failures (and paying to play online, to a lesser degree). Combine that with Blu-Ray being more attractive as HD penetration continues to rise and I'd say they have a fighting chance for relative parity and beyond.
I'm also hoping MS doesn't make some kind of horrendous misstep with Natal next year.

Natal and Sony's wand peripheral are feeling like two huge me-toos that are likely to fall flat. I'm disappointed they feel they have to try to replicate the Wii's "success" in some way. It just makes me wonder where else this money could've been spent.
Comparing the PS3 to the 3DO seems like a bit of a stretch.

Comparing one last-place system that was the most powerful in its generation but suffered from a $700 launch price to another last-place system that was the most powerful in its generation but suffered from a $700 launch price is a stretch? How's that work?

203W. Now what, genius?
Edit: Manufacturing Date 7-18-2007. Apparently I was thinking mine was Falcon (That was the new chip being introduced at the time) but its not even that. I have no idea how its still functioning.

That's the original chipset, although since you have an Elite it probably uses a less power-hungry GPU that they included before the switch to the Falcon system. My first 2 machines were 203W.
Nevertheless, it's still one of the most failure-prone versions.
Also, you can get a 'new' pro unit just about everywhere and it's a good chance it's just a refurbed 203W or 175W system. I only learned about this after receiving my 4th unit, guess I got lucky that it was a Jasper.
