Not the most thrilling leak, but it's a good update. Keeps it current. The GPU will be a nice update for occasional gamers.
BTW, the current MacBook has a LED-backlit screen.

As I commented in the original article, why does the box's label say '© 2009'?.

I do love how they whited out the serial number and part number, but left the bar-scan code visible.
Great thinking.

I don't think the resolution is high enough to make out the bar code, but I could be wrong.

This is pretty much the same as the 13" MBP, minus firewire and the aluminum case, for a $200 savings (assuming it's $999).

Minus FireWire, aluminum case, lit keyboard, auto-dimming screen, battery status indicator, infrared remote receiver, SD card slot, and 2GB RAM.

Take auto dimming screen off your list (why is that there?). Basically, it's the same as the current MacBook but with a bump in CPU speed and the new GPU.

Spheric is talking about the MacBook Pros automatically adjusting the screen brightness by reading the ambient light. The MacBook doesn't have the light sensor.

Are you sure? I think all Macs with iSight cameras have ambient light sensors.

No, the MacBook and iMac don't have ambient light sensors.

The screen is of the same quality?

my old MacBook used to have an IR receiver and firewire port, and it was only 16% slower.

Wha-huh? Since when do iMacs not have the light sensor? My 2005 iMac G5 had one.

Not for display brightness though, but for sleep light brightness. Aluminum iMacs don't have sleep lights, so no ALS.

Correct.
Also, yes, the MacBook Pros have a much better screen.

Even so, you can clearly make out the three MAC addresses. If Apple wanted this would easily allow them to track it down.

So bottom line is you save $200 by giving up on
• Al case
• FW
• 2GB RAM
• backlit KB
• and some other gimmicks
Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad deal? Shouldn't this MB sell for no more than $899?

The auto-adjusting screen is less of a "gimmick" than the backlit KB IMO.
Screen quality is also not a "gimmick".
So yes, while the price difference is rather small for what you're giving up, Apple's strategy works THE OTHER WAY ROUND:
"Hey, look how much more you're getting for just that €250! The MacBook Pro is a much better deal!"
It's called "upsell" for a reason.

I use the backlit KB all the time. I never use auto-adjust brightness (I have keys for that). To me the latter is quite clearly the gimmick.
I buy the upsell argument. But I doubt they'll sell a whole lot of these mediocre MBs at $999.

Heh. On my 15" PowerBook, it was the exact opposite:
I really appreciated the auto-dimming, while the silver keys forced me to keep adjusting the keyboard backlighting, as it was useless in most "intermediate" environments.

Backlighting on the Al keys sucked compared to the backlit black keys on the new MBPs. There's much more contrast with the new KB. It helps a lot.

I like the subtle glow of my aluminum MBP keys, but functionally you're very right-they aren't great in those "in-between" lighting situations. Quite dark or pretty light they're fine. But black keys do show up the lighting much, much better.

Oh right. Forgot that’s what it was for. Makes sense.

Upselling generally means to pull in people with a cheap entry-level price and then selling them extras on which you have much better margins. That's not what Apple is doing - they could easily stand to sell the rumored MB at $899.
That said, the extras in this case don't cost very much.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

For my applications, the backlit keyboard is not a gimmick. I like to use my computer in dim lighting, and while my fingers find the "home" keys easily, I've never been good with the number row or the F keys without looking at what I'm doing. With my original version MBP, that subtle backlighting makes it easy for me to use the computer in any lighting environment without the keyboard overwhelming the room or making it hard to see the screen for the glare. One man's gimmick may be another's selling point.

It's interesting to note that it comes with a 63.5 Wh battery which corresponds to the same 10 hour battery life the 13" MBP has.
The Vietnamese leak originally showed a box indicating 7 hours of battery life. The box also said ©2009 so maybe it was just an old box. The specs are printed on a sticker. Perhaps Apple had some old boxes left.

I find the auto-dimming screen annoying and gimmicky. The backlit keyboard is totally awesome though.
