From a technical perspective, Apple doesn't say anything about the range of these two.

However, it is possible that the Airport Extreme gets better numbers, due to the two separate networks it can create, and the possibility to mount it more flexibly.

MY suspicion is that they both have the same output power, but that the Extreme probably has better antennas.

Having used both extensively, I've gotten much better results (range, ability to penetrate walls, etc.) from the Extreme over the Express.
