Any way to get the "It's 2011 not 1984" banner ad by Motorola removed from the rotation on MacNN? After all, this is an APPLE forum...

There is a Mitsubishi Outlander advert on the bottom, can we remove that? This isn't a car forum.

I think Person Man’s peeve here was that Motorola’s add is a direct jab at the original Apple ad, which might be seen as a bit tasteless on an Apple-centric forum.

I don't understand. It's an advertisement. This is a discussion forum. Why does it matter?

I'd like to believe that Apple aficionados can deal with ads that make fun of Apple.
I don't know why it would be considered tasteless. Ballsy, maybe.

Oh there is a Galaxy Tab in the banner ad space. Can we get rid of that too?

And, for the record, even as an Apple fanboy I find Motorola's Xoom ad to be right on the money.

Nah, it's fine that you brought this up. Only dark side is that people now have fuel for snarky replies to your posts.

It seems most people find that level of "inappropriate" ad amusing rather than irritating. I see Person Man's point-the ad is kind of snarky. But the video ad isn't...it makes reference to the groundbreaking "Introducing Mac" 1984 ad, then goes in its own direction. And it's about a phone, not a computer, touting the "next, newest, best Android yet" features of their phone. It looks like "we'll catch up with you yet!" instead of being snarky. And while the video is nicely done, it's not anywhere near as interesting or innovative as the Apple ad was 27 years ago.

I find this a rather bizarre complaint.
Google's context-sensitive ads have for a long time created the occasional surreal ad constellation, and as for the Xoom - it's targeted advertising, this forum is tech-savvy, and part of their intent is to try and draw iOS customers over…
Do you feel insulted, and if so, why?
Or do you worry that the ads might be effective? If so, that's kind of their purpose.
I find the video I've seen astoundingly devoid of taste - it's kind of funny how they do the "it's 2011" thing, but use CGI graphics of ca 2002 vintage to get their point across. Very appropriate.

With you there. My understanding was that this was supposed to be a SuperBowl ad. As such, much suspicion was that the video out right now was more for story boarding purposes ... either that, or Motorola totally doesn't understand the technological expectations for 2011, which doesn't bode well for the Xoom.

Moto spun off their mobile phone division as of January 4. It looks like they stopped looking at smart advertising quite a while before that. With that said, I think the Xoom will be a decent Android phone. But I don't see it catching up with what iPhone users have come to depend on in terms of smoothness of the interface, available apps, etc. It's not going to convert many people who chose the iPhone first.

Also, it's odd to see so much emphasis on the idea that the Xoom is everything the iPad is not…cause the iPad is selling like crazy.
It's like they're trying to redefine the market with somebody else's vocabulary.

Maybe that says a lot about the video's message then. It sure looked like an ad for a phone... I kind of pay attention to advertising technique, having grown up in an advertising family, worked at the agency on summer internships, etc., and I didn't get any sense from the video I saw that it wasn't a phone. Of course I assumed a great deal-it is, after all, a Motorola product, and Moto isn't known for tablets or other computers...

What is the matter with $800? It's only $70 more than the 32 Gb iPad with 3G (Xoom is 32 Gb with VZW 3G), and you get a lot more performance with a 1 GHz Tegra dual-core processor, camera with 720P video recording, 1080p playback, and slightly better resolution. Plus, the native Gmail and Google Maps clients are amazing in Honeycomb, if you're a heavy Gmail user that could be enough to choose the Xoom.

How many Apple customers buy the fully featured iPad ?
5% ? 10% ?
By neglecting to offer a cheaper, lesser featured version they forgo a HUGE share of the market.

This. Sure, them Xoom has nice specs, but it's gonna take $ to attract people away from the iPad. The tablet war is about experience, and the iPad experience still beats the Android experience, especially for the non-techie user.

True enough. My guess is that, like the Galaxy Tab, there will be a 3G-free version after a month or so and maybe a smaller version which could fill the $499 shoes.
