Hi, since yesterday my macbookpro 2.4ghz core 2 duo aluminium, won't start.

i press powerbutton, hybernation light turns on, followed by sound of dvd drive. : black screen.

i take out battery, powercord, press powerbutton 5 seconds, replace power, press powerbutton, : black screen.

zapping pram doesnt work, there is no startup sound ever.

i took out battery for 4 hours, took out powercord. waited before turning on, still no effect.

what can i do? the mbp hasnt got applecare anymore, it's 4 years old and has been used very heavy.

Does the LED stay on? Does caps lock light up when pressed if you give it enough time to boot? Do you get the volume noise when you turn volume up or down once its had time to boot? In short, is it booting just without video?

If the answer to the above is yes, you most likely have the dreaded 8600M GT failure. You should ask Apple if that turns out to be the case, but at 4 years, you might be out of luck.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Try removing the RAM testing it in alternating slots.

Hi, I tried swapping the RAM modules. It doesnt change it.

It's not just the backlight or screen not being on : the capslock wont burn at all. the only things that are burning are the LED (open lid) and if pressed, the battery identicators. From the inside I can hear a quiet huming of what I think is the harddisk, but it's not rattling like a harddisk should.
It wont start in target mode either.

I'll just remove the harddisk so I have access to my precious data and replace it with a newer one I once bought.

Same issue tried everything on apple website. Rotated ram and tried one at a time. No go. Currently trying leaving it unplugged and no battery for at least an hour. Will try different ram tomorrow when I can get access to some.

I have the SAME proble:
mbp 2008 nvidia series

Power on -> no screen, no chime, unrsponsive keyboards, just hd spinning and dim standby light.

I'm scavenging the internet about this problem and tried most of the suggested methods but nothing works (replacing ram, pram reset, target mode, ..).

I took it to a apple service center and they told me it's a broken logic board and its gonna cost me 650 euro...

I'm really not happy..

I have the same problem with my mid 2007 MBP. Just died out of the blue. The same symptoms as above with the sleep light coming on but no video and on re-boot no startup chime.

Given the age of the machine, the amount of use and the likely cost of repair I decided to buy a new one. I doubt very much that Apple will look at a free repair and I can't wait around to argue over this with them as I need a machine for work.

Take it to the Apple store... complain and complain (being nice)... and speak to a manager... saying it was a ticking time bomb because the chipset was bound to fail, just a matter of time... I can't see them NOT comping the repair.

If it doesn't work, take to another Apple store and repeat.

They refused to comp one for me a while back because an AASP tech claimed he found traces of liquid on the optical drive. I argued harder than I ever have (and I have gotten so many free repairs for people you wouldn't believe) but despite admitting the liquid could not affect the GPU which had failed their diagnostic and me offering photos that the board was clean they refused to swap it out for me.

That one was with the cover period of the REP too, most of them are not any more.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....
