Despite the horrific state of 2's multiplayer and the sometimes off-putting controls, I'm looking forward to this title in the Fall (4 player co-op!), so I imagine this will need a thread eventually.
Big reveal on the all-new Horde-mode today.
The New, Better Beast Mode is Gears of War 3's No-Longer-Secret Weapon
The Mauler has a shield, as you can see. Fergusson said that one of his team's strategies in Beast Mode is to form a phalanx of Maulers and then march them ahead of a few Boomers who fire boomshots over their heads.
Sounds incredible.

Wow! The more I see of this game, the more I want it. From what I've seen on both beast mode and horde 2.0, there are some serious improvements over Gears 2!

Gears 3 Multiplayer maps revealed
Checkout
Checkout's combat takes place in the carcass of an abandoned superstore. The shop owners tried to move their inventory with a closeout sale in the weeks leading up to the HOD evacuations, but ultimately had to walk away and leave everything to time and history. The intense close-quarters combat of the store aisles makes every decision important. Weapon selection is key, cover is essential to survival and every move has an impact. When facing your enemy, remember what the sign says: “Everything must go.”
Old Town
Several remote areas of Sera managed to stave off the impact of Emergence for quite some time. Island towns such as this one were able to sustain themselves with small farms and a steady bounty from the ocean. But all good things must come to an end, and eventually they could hide no more. This is an excellent map for team-based play, with multiple areas that are well-suited to both attack and defence scenarios. A well-executed plan will often reap great rewards, and an enemy caught unaware can be flushed into a trap like a chicken free of its coop.
Thrashball
This stadium was once home to a different sort of national hero, one who fought for honour and glory, instead of scrambling for survival. The invigorating roar of the crowd has been replaced by the melancholy moaning of wind in the empty stadium seats. Stadium matches are no longer restricted to the playing field, and the team that controls the concession stands earns a great advantage. The scoreboard still keeps track of every point earned, but its frayed support cables also make it a precarious trap for anyone foolish enough to run underneath it.
Trenches
The Locust have begun to carve mines and tunnels into the rocks of the Seran Deadlands, eking out any existence that resembles the underground passages of the Hollow they once called home. But this harsh environment is as relentless an d unforgiving as any enemy they've ever had to face. The Locust Trenches are small and tight, with clean lines of sight across virtually the entire battlefield. The central hill leads to a fortified bunker with a strategically important vantage point. Once taken, it is rarely surrendered, unless opposing forces can manage to sneak up under the cover of a passing sandstorm that leaves everyone blind for a short while.
The next set of maps were not included in the beta, but have now been detailed for you. You may recognize a couple of the names as they were included in the voting to be chosen for the beta, but were ultimately not selected by the fans.
Drydock
Much has been written about the beauty of Seran culture, but people often forget the backbone of industry upon which it all relies. This shipyard stands full of undelivered goods and the necessary tools of a society's infrastructure. Its most prominent landmark is the rotting husk of a cargo ship that will forever stand in Drydock.
Hotel
Small island resorts such as this one catered to the opulent tastes of vacationing Serans. But as the Lambent infection spreads across the globe, tides are shifting to flood once popular beaches, and fierce winds batter and push at the walls of humanity's creations.
Mercy
This area was once a bustling town square filled with people, but it never recovered from the UIR mortar shellings of the Pendulum Wars. Emergence soon followed, and the already heartbroken residents were shown no mercy by Locust forces, leading to an almost immediate evacuation. This large and open central square is surrounded on all sides by sheltered passageways and buildings. A raised dais yields powerful weaponry and a view of virtually everything within range, but the power located there must be hard-earned and well-protected to provide any lasting advantage.
Overpass
As the Lambent infection spreads across Sera, the planet is quite literally falling apart. And as the substrata beneath this forgotten overpass begin to disintegrate, the entire city block is collapsing along with it, sliding into a vast underground cavern. Head for the high ground or you just might slide along with it. Battles in this highly dynamic map often focus around the elevated Overpass, where teams can hole up and take advantage of the protected position and emplaced weaponry located there. But gaining the high ground can also be a trap, as the team left below will most assuredly use mortars and orbital lasers to regain their lost footing.
Sandbar
This observation post once had a commanding view of the distant horizon. Never threatened, it was thought to be impenetrable due to its unpredictable coastline and the constant shifting of sandbars along the shallow water of the coastline. And it never did fall, it was simply abandoned when humanity fled from a threat that nobody could ever see coming.
The final map is a returning one from Gears of War and Gears of War 2.
Gridlock
This ashen street was once a bustling tourist destination known for its quaint inns and waterfront cafés. Even the water is gone now, replaced by the burnt shell of a crater that stands as a testament to the loss of Seran humanity.

I probably should at least play a demo of this franchise, as i haven't played any of the games. I really don't want to start playing the game this late in the franchise either.
I assume there is a demo of Gears of War 2? Is it single player or MP?

Leonard - I don't think there have ever been demos for AAA titles like Halo, COD or Gears.
Dakar - That's what I'm afraid of. KCros has a newborn, Bogues never shows his face on Live, Fatty is skipping this game and Jawbone... well no one cares about Jawbone. Getting some 4 player co-op seems like a dream now.

I'm home with my newborn and can play, just not in super long stretches of time. This is the first game I've pre-ordered via Amazon and should have it on my doorstep on release date. I'm really looking forward to getting to playing with you guys.
BTW, Seriously 3.0 looks like it's going to take a lot of play time to earn.

Yeah, it seems there re no demos for the GoW games or most HALO games, but there seems to be a "trial" version of HALO:Reach. Ahhh, if I find some time some day, maybe I'll purchase a used version of GoW 2. I just wouldn't mind experiencing it.

Some things to take into consideration when playing which look quite promising...
Mutators
Mutators can be used to add different gameplay variables in Horde mode and Arcade mode - they can not be used in every competitive game mode. Some mutators will increase the difficulty level, but will increase the player's score as a result. Those that decrease the difficulty level will decrease the score too. There are also 'Fun' mutators that have no impact on gameplay or score at all. Here is a full list of mutators, and the criteria need for unlocking them:
Easier Mutators
• Comet - earn the gold Shock Trooper medal.
As you roadie run, you'll build up energy, letting you ram into enemies.
• Instagib Melee - kill 200 wretches.
Melee attacks cause enemies to explode.
• Super Reload - earn the bronze Master-At-Arms medal.
More damage and clip size for an active reload.
• Infinite Ammo - earn 100 Combat Engineer pins.
Infinite ammo for all weapons.
• Big Explosions - earn 100 Hail Mary pins.
Bigger explosions, but you didn't need me to tell you that, did you?
Harder Mutators
• Enemy Regen - earn the silver Aficionado medal.
Enemies will regain health over time if you don't kill them.
• Vampire - earn 100 Executor pins.
Your health does not regenerate automatically, but you do earn health for dealing damage.
• Must Active Reload - earn the silver Active Reloader medal.
The only way to reload is to perform an active reload.
• Friendly Fire - complete the campaign in four-player co-op.
Teammates can cause damage to each other.
Fun Mutators
• Big Head - earn the gold Horder medal.
Giant heads in the style of NBA Jam.
• Pinata - earn the gold Investor medal.
Tokens drop from every kill, and picking them up earns you points.
• Flower Blood - earn the silver King of COG medal.
All blood effects are replaced by flowers.
• Headless Chicken - unlocked from the outset.
Enemies attack each other for several seconds after they lose their heads.
• Laugh Track - earn the bronze medals for Tour of Duty, For the Horde, I'm A Beast and Warmonger.
Adds an audible laugh track to the game.
Character unlocks
There are five COG and five Locust characters unlocked from the outset on the disc, as well as the Adam Fenix bonus character included in the Limited and Epic Editions of the game. There are another 32 characters that can be unlocked as players progress through the game - here is a full list:
COG
• COG Gear - reach level 2.
• Samantha Byrne - reach level 4.
• Dizzy Wallin - reach level 7.
• Jace Stratton - reach level 10.
• Clayton Carmine - reach level 14.
• Classic Dom - reach level 17.
• Classic Cole - reach level 23.
• Classic Baird - reach level 30.
• Benjamine Carmine - reach level 34.
• Civilian Anya - reach level 45.
• Colonel Hoffman - reach level 50.
• Anthony Carmine - reach level 75.
• Classic Marcus - earn the silver Veteran medal.
• Superstar Cole - earn the gold MVP medal.
• Golden Gear - earn the bronze War Supporter medal.
• Chairman Prescott - earn the silver Allfathers medal.
• Unarmoured Marcus - finish the Gears of War 3 campaign.
• Aaron Griffin - earn the onyx Big Money medal.
• Cole Train - completed ten matches as Thrashball Cole during the Gears of War 3 beta.
Locust
• Locust Miner - reach level 3.
• Beast Rider - reach level 5.
• Locust Hunter - reach level 8.
• Theron Guard - reach level 12.
• Locust Spotter - reach level 20.
• Flame Grenadier - reach level 26.
• Locust Grenadier - reach level 39.
• Locust Hunter Elite - reach level 60.
• Golden Miner - earn the gold Rifleman medal.
• Locust Golden Hunter - earn the gold Master-at-Arms medal.
• Locust Sniper - earn the bronze Headshot medal.
• Locust Kantus - earn the gold Medic medal.
• Savage Theron Guard - earn the onyx I'm A Beast medal.
Weapon executions
• Lancer - 200 kills.
• Hammerburst - 200 kills.
• Retro Lancer - 200 kills.
• Gnasher - 200 kills.
• Sawed-Off - 200 kills.
• Gorgon Pistol - 40 kills.
• Boltok Pistol - 40 kills.
• Boomshot - 40 kills.
• Digger - 40 kills.
• Hammer of Dawn - 40 kills.
• Mulcher - 40 kills.
• Mortar - 40 kills.
• Oneshot - 40 kills.
• Scorcher - 40 kills.
• Torque Bow - 40 kills.
• Longshot - 40 kills.
• Cleaver - 40 kills.
Avatar awards
• Marcus' Doo-Rag - complete the Gears of War 3 campaign.
• Horde Shirt - unlock the Welcome to Horde Mode achievement in Gears of War 3.
• Locust Drone Mask - unlock the Welcome to Beast Mode achievement in Gears of War 3.
I like the idea of Vampire. Gives you much more of a reason to go out and get kills rather than defending a post of incoming horde waves. That'll completely change the game.

Considering that shit isn't worth more than $8 combined, I'd sure as hell hope so.
Edit: I look forward to the day Activison charges for weapon camos, rather than has them as unlocks.

Not against it,but with so few people getting this the appeal is low.
I jumped on the multi, and it definitely feels like they've given up on the "tactical shooter" thing. The speed seems higher. Other than that, still losing shotgun battles on the strength of my latency.
Played a few rounds of Horde too. The did a lot to reinvent it and make it deeper, but I'm not sure sold on all the aspects yet.
(Also, Armored Kantus = OMG)

I got with some friends last night and hit up the first act of 4 player co-op campaign. Pretty funny dialogue and some cool scenes.
I don't like that if you get the boom shot or the sniper rifle, you can't replenish your ammo with ammo boxes. You have to find the weapons dropped from enemies to replenish them. The different executions add a nice touch to the way you can take out enemies.

Tried out Beast mode last night. It's alright. I'd say it's more than alright, but we had a pretty good crew (I think we finished with only 4 players). The Mauler can be quite the bastard. The mode also feels like its better for team work than Horde mode. A lot kill-stealing/assists going on.

So I got on Horde mode last night and made it to wave 40 before calling it a night. The boss waves are awesome! (every 10th wave) Wave 40 consisted of fighting 2 Beserkers, an Armored Kantus and a f'n Brumak! Took 3 fully charged torque bows and a nade stick to take out the Armored Kantus. Those guys are ridiculous! I can't image what wave 50 will bring.

I'm a little surprised but there don't seem to be any guides online for Horde –like weaknesses per type. Is there any good way to fight a Berserker? I was on a team last night that was just flame throwing it to hell and back. It's entire body glowing, but it didn't seem to do much.

Our strategy last night was to stick all together (5 of us) focus our attacks on one berserker and we all used our shotguns. After about 6 shots from each of us, it went down. Not an easy task.

The flame thrower does slow her down. Though it takes a few seconds for her to heat up enough where she flinches.
Edit: Just did Horde to Level 30. Ugh. There went two hours of my life.

I'll probably be playing all week - always down for Horde or Beast.

We were having problems joining parties too, Friday.
To answer your question, though, the player population is a strong factor here. Through out the week I was seeing <7000 in the Horde and Beast playlists.
That said, I've never been impressed with Epic's netcode, right down to still having to wait as it does something every time you cancel matchmaking. No other game I've ever played online has done that.

I'm probably taking tonight off, played a lot during the weekend. Culminating in playing some Horde last night (Because we couldn't find a Beast game either), where three of us managed to last till Level 30 (more?) and do it in under an hour and a half.

Mine is open and always is. Most of my friends are two, but we still get strange issues in MW2 and Black Ops.
