I just downloaded Firebug 1.8 and started to explore it.
It's RAM hungry, so I heard, and therefore I'd shut Firebug down when not needed.
Only: there is no "quite Firebug" menu item.
It's on all the time. How do you shut it down?

Hmm, it used to be you just clicked the little x and it went away.
I downgraded my firefox and am still running firebug 1.7 so I can't test this for you.

Clicking the little x is what I just do.
But you have no real control that shows it's off.

If it's not visible on your web pages it is off. AFAIK extensions/add-ons generally don't consume resources to sit idle.
