So the Tokyo Game Show is under way. Boatload of Sony info, but I didn't find anything I thought was particularly relevant or interesting in a quick perusal, so I'll leave it to our resident Sony fan to post anything that catches his eye.
Otherwise, time for EAs bad PR of the week:
EA Offer Refunds For Tiger Woods 2012 PC? | Rock, Paper, Shotgun
Sadly, it seems that instead of being a port of the high-end console version, like what EA used to do, it is apprently based heavily on the free-to-play, Unity-based, Tiger Woods Online.
Some customers were confused by this, and had expected the PC version to include all of the features from the Xbox 360 or PS3 version (and their confusion wasn’t helped by this page on EA.com implying the PC version might be the same as the console version).
Reddit destroyed this, but some comparison shots from NeoGAF really sealed the deal:
Free-to-play
Retail
Shady as ****.

Gamasutra - News - Sony Amends Online Terms To Block Class Action Lawsuits
Sony this week revised the terms of service and user agreement for its online services, inserting a new section that states users cannot enter into a class action lawsuit against Sony unless Sony agrees to the initiation.
The move comes months after Sony's online services, including PlayStation Network, were compromised by a cyber attack that left millions of accounts compromised. The first class action over the breach was filed in April this year.
Classy.
Gamasutra - News - Analysis: Breaking Down 'Alarming' U.S. Game Retail Contraction
Three things:
1. We're in a mother****ing recession.
2. We're deeper in to a console generation than ever before, and even then we're entering end-of-life.
3. This Holiday Season will be momentous.

There was a Supreme Court decision about this a few months ago. Consumers can't get any respect, apparently.

Sorry not really followed GoW stuff but they have dedicated servers for GoW3 on the Xbox?

Ha...
Actually, I was asking because I just started the game, and wondered if I should anticipate it sucking me in for a few weeks. I bought it after listening to several podcast specials, and hoped it was going to be as good as advertised.

When I was staying at a friend's during the floods here I was watching him play. I do have to say, the animations, the graphics... it does look like a project from four years ago, maybe more. But I haven't heard any complaints about the actual gameplay. (Aside from the first boss battle)

Sony saddles Vita with expensive, proprietary memory and short battery life
The PlayStation Vita is launching on December 17 in Japan, while those of us in North America still don't know when it will be appearing on store shelves here. Sony has announced that 26 games will be available for the system at launch in Japan, along with a wide array of peripherals... including proprietary memory cards. Keep in mind, the system has no built-in memory, so if you'd like to use downloadable games, movies, or music, you're going to need to buy into Sony's proprietary format.
Here are the sizes of the memory sticks that will be available, next to the price in Yen and then an approximate value in dollars. Buckle up.
Memory Card 4GB ÂĄ2,200 $29
Memory Card 8GB ÂĄ3,200 $42
Memory Card 16GB ÂĄ5,500 $71
Memory Card 32GB ÂĄ9,500 $124
Sony has also released information on the system's battery life:
Game: Approx. 3-5 hours
Video: Approx. 5 hours
Music (in stand-by mode): Approx. 9 hours
This is with the screen at the default brightness, Bluetooth turned off, and headphones used for audio.
I don't recall the 3DSs battery life numbers, but I suspect they were equally abysmal.

Stupid Sony and their proprietary formats. $124 for a 32GB memory card? Good lord. I could get the same amount of storage on an high speed SD card for less than $50.

Gameplay is very gratifying. Probably the only stealth game in memory that is actually fun to play.

Netflix's DVD division renamed 'Qwikster,' adds games-by-mail | Joystiq
Netflix made waves a few weeks ago when it split its streaming and DVD-by-mail services into two separate plans with separate prices, but these measures were apparently more preparatory than reactionary, it seems. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced that the movie megalith's DVD-by-mail devision will be separated from its streaming services and spun off into its own company: Qwikster.
Qwikster, which will officially launch "in a few weeks," will be a completely independent entity from Netflix; the two services will not integrate in any way, meaning two different websites, two different accounts, and two different bills. What's truly out of left field, however, is the fact that Qwikster will also offer PS3, 360 and Wii titles by way of a "video game upgrade option" similar to Netflix's existing Blu-Ray upgrade system.
Netflix, I don't understand you anymore.
All I can think of is all those times a movie or TV show was automatically added to my Instant because it became available... Those days are gone.
Also, good luck Gamefly.

The Netflix/Qwikster split blows my mind. It makes absolutely no sense.
Also, "Qwikster" is really difficult to type for some reason.

I'm not sure what angle they're playing here, but convenience is certainly not it.
My best guess is this to make the streaming side look poorer (though that assumes their DVD side was the real profit maker, which doesn't seem likely).

It's to fool you into thinking they are separate companies and that your getting your money's-worth from each.
Or it's to kill off the DVD side of the business, which they seem to be intent on doing.

That all depends on how much they're paying content providers in exchange for the right to stream their content.
Also, I broke down -- I hope to see some of you on GoW3 this week.

Yuck! That's one ugly trike.
BTW, that's not Jesse James standing next to Paul Jr. That's Gears 3 Director of Production Rod Ferguson. (no relation to Turd Ferguson)

Netflix is dividing itself for several reasons:
1) because the DVD business is in decline and the streaming business is booming;
2) because DVD is US only;
3) because the licensing for DVD and streaming is completely different.
It makes little sense to keep these completely different businesses together.

Tuesday News
Crytek developing Homefront sequel with THQ | Joystiq
A sequel to Homefront will be developed in collaboration with Crytek, the company behind Far Cry, Crysis and the visually opulent CryEngine platform.
I think I speak for everyone when I say, we'll wait and see. Which is not the ideal situation for a publisher to be in when you're trying to create a new online multiplayer franchise.
Report: Microsoft in talks with Comcast, Verizon for 'Live TV' service, Samsung for TV integration [update] | Joystiq
Digiday, the self-proclaimed "authority on digital media, marketing and advertising," claims to have heard from "multiple sources" that indicate a pending deal between Microsoft and the subscription TV titans at Comcast and Verizon. While ATT's U-verse service is currently available to Xbox owners, it represents a small percentage of the overall "cable TV" market in North America.
Digiday also reports that Microsoft is working the TV angle from the hardware side as well, and is "actively looking to partner with TV manufacturers, including Samsung" to build "some sort of Window Live gaming hub" into their televisions.
Day-one AC: Revelations PS3 copies include original game -Destructoid
A good deal, but somewhat paradoxical. If you've never played the original AC, do you jump in before playing the game you actually bought to play? Do you play afterwards, even though its going to feel very feature stripped by comparison?
Remember, Sony's Shitty New Terms of Service Don't Apply to Everyone
A Sony spokesperson has confirmed with Kotaku Australia that across the territories governed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the terms of service agreement users sign has not changed— as such the "don't sue us" clauses present for Americans are entirely absent for customers in Europe and Australasia.
America, **** yeah!
I give it until the release of the XBOX 3, before MS revises it's ToS to match.

The idea here, as I've read elsewhere, is that making each enterprise a stand-alone company stands to benefit both by decoupling pricing from each other. It also makes the DVD side easier to sell off, if they want to go that route.
