Besides the line above, I won't put what I think about the article (yet). Just the messenger don't you know.

Since Andrea Dworkin wrote about pornography as being anti-women in the early 1980s, we have become acclimatised to the idea that porn is bad for us, and must only be tolerated due to reasons of democracy and liberalism. In the past 30 years this idea has largely gone unchallenged outside academia and, in the process, feminism has been conflated with the anti-porn position. We have effectively been neuro-linguistically programmed to equate porn with harm.
I don't personally know any people who agree with this. Pretty much everyone I know thinks it is harmless in moderation. And I think this assessment of academia is way over-generalized. Even in the women's studies department, the attitude to porn is much more nuanced than this, never mind what they might say in the engineering or computing departments.

I'd say so too, except that the industry treats young women (and men, I guess) like meat. Yes, the IDEA is a harmless one, but as with some illicit drugs, the whole industry behind it is the corrupt, abusing part that ruins lives.

This could easily be said of many industries. The fashion industry for instance.

Good? I guess it's fine to watch, but the business itself, and the atmosphere around it, isn't very healthy. Most women I know who have been involved in the adult film industry have had some serious health issues, not to mention the drug and alcohol addictions from the lifestyle surrounding it.
Overall, the consumption of porn may not be the evil that people think it is, but it's production is another matter. That doesn't mean I think it should be banned, I don't think that way. However, I do believe that it needs better monitoring and screening.

Not sure what that means.
We know some former adult performers. Most have some hefty emotional issues and life-long medical problems from years of unprotected sex in an industry that should have more frequent screening. While it was their choice to get into the business, 18-20 is rather young to see the big picture of what that type of work can do to you. Some guy says, "hey, you can make $2k for 3 hours of your time", and that seems great. Then he introduces the young woman to the ten fellas she's going to be working with that afternoon...
Not much glamour to be had in it, but the money is real if they can avoid the drugs and infections. I guess it can work, if they look at it as a stepping stone and not a destination. Maybe take the $250k they can make in two years and use it for college or to start a business, but that seldom ever happens. Then, the money's gone, their looks fade, and they end up 25-going-on-40 and wondering WTF happened to it all.

Does anyone else think that porn and sex crimes would be less traumatic if society didn't condition everyone to be monogamous or (for lack of a better word) reserved or generally make such a big deal about it?

I think that's more to do with communication and the dogmatic view that sex is somehow dirty or corrupting. There's really nothing wrong with committing to a person or being reserved, it's the heavy-handed way some people like to enforce their moral agendas that annoys me.
I just want a gov't that keeps it nose out of my bedroom and it's hand out of my wallet, but unfortunately you can only choose one of the other.

50% of the places you go are recreational huh?
I guess that's how you know some former "adult performers" huh?
I have so much fun making fun of chuckleheads in my real life that I just had to take it on the road, so to speak.

Anyone who doesn't do porn to put themselves through college is elitist and looking down at everyone. According to Scott Brown anyhow. We should all embrace it!

I said, "50% of the places I go are within biking distance", not "50% of the places I go I ride a bike". I know, it's a reading comprehension thing, chucklehead.
Still not sure what this has to do with the discussion, and why you're derailing it. Care to explain it?

What riding a bicycle has to do with the adult film industry. Screamer seems to be losing his focus in these discussions lately.

I see, the recreational bit you added in this thread.

I remembered you ride a bike.
You said most women you know in the adult film industry.
Not a lot of people know one, let alone numerous women in the sex industry.
Hence, your bike gets around.
I thought it was humorous.

It's likely because there are 5 studios nearby, one of which is run by Vivid. My wife is a former exotic dancer/escort, she knew many of these women back when she was doing that sort of thing. They still come over and hang out sometimes.

The randomness and weirdness of thinking of Shaddim's bicycle in this porn thread made me laugh screener, I have to admit. I don't know what you were thinking, but thanks

Oh well, I suppose it is better than him sitting behind his keyboard swearing at people because he can't form a cogent argument.

No sense of humor, thin skinned.
Odd.
I would think you'd need it considering your wife's previous profession.
People can be mean.
But good on you for not letting some ones past mess up a relationship.
Maybe it would help to understand some of those obese slugs, those slackers protesting wall street and the banks.
