tried to tweak my extensions and upon restarting the desktop and icons appear then immediately fade to black unless i "catch" the moment they appear and click on an icon. when the screen goes black pointer remains visible. i have tried restarting using all the previous extension sets (including turning on ALL possible extensions) and same thing happens.

any clues?

thanks

Did you try to turn up brightness?

Does it work starting from CD? You might have deleted Control Panel

Try resetting your NVRAM and trashing your display preferences.

1) *shut down* computer (not restart)
2) power on holding command + option + P + R
3) wait for 2 restarts
4) release and then hold shift until you see "extensions off"
5) go into your system folder/preferences and trash display preferences
6) shutdown and power up normally

Hope that fixes it...

Uh-oh.

Sounds like you turned the setup assistant doo-dad (currently booted into X, so can't supply the exact name!) on. Switch back to the base set of extensions, and see if the problem persists.

He's already tried tweaking extensions it sounds.

Not sure what Setup Assistant you're talking about? What are you talking about exactly? Not sure of any in OS 9 and earlier that black your screen. I'm assuming he's in OS 9 or earlier because he mentioned tweaking extensions...
