Time Warner Cable CEO Rob Marcus has fueled speculation that the company is preparing to bring its TWC TV app to the Apple TV platform. Speaking at a UBS investor conference in New York, the executive noted that the company is preparing to expand the range of supported platforms for the app, which is currently available on iOS and Android devices, game consoles and smart TVs.

Apple has regularly updates its set-top box with new apps from several different companies, recently adding PBS content and Yahoo's Screen portal. Other existing apps include Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Vevo, Sky News, Disney, Smithsonian Channel and ESPN, among others.

Aside from Time Warner Cable's own app, Marcus also hinted that the company is warming up to the idea of allowing alternative streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu, to be added to its set-top boxes. Cable companies have been slow to embrace such services, which are viewed as a "cord cutting" threat to the cable TV business.

"There is the other question of whether or not we ought to make some of these online services available on the set-top box," he said, as quoted by CNET. "I think that's an interesting concept, and we're certainly open to it."

The company has yet to publicly confirm the Apple TV rumors or outline any formal plans to add the third-party streaming apps to its set-top boxes.

The Time Warner app on Roku 3 is nothing to rave about. It's slow and has a clunky interface. I'd rather just switch over to the Cisco cable box and use it instead. Besides, you can't record or watch any recordings using the Roku 3 TWC app.

Sure, they'll be glad to add these services on to their boxes.... after forcing everyone over to limited data plans with overage charges on their internet service. They will get their piece of meat one way or another.

One reason NOT to merge Comcast with TWC is Comcast's utter determination to control the user, ergo Apps like TWC [albeit limited] are foreign.
