The venerable GameSpy game hosting service will shut down after 17 years in operation. A brief posting by parent company Glu Mobile noted that "effective May 31, GameSpy will cease providing all hosting services for all games still using GameSpy. Thanks for a great ride!" Hundreds of games on nearly every platform are affected by the closure, including popular titles on OS X, iOS, Android, Windows, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.

Notable titles that will lose multiplayer support, and in some cases, CD key authentication are Civilization IV, Halo: Combat Evolved for Windows and OS X, Dungeon Defenders on Playstation 3, Gotham City Impostors, and Red Dead Redemption.

Most of the titles involved were published in 2010 or earlier. GameSpy no longer accepted new games after 2013. Glu reports that 800 developers and publishers still use its service.

This is also why many Nintendo DS / Wii multiplayer modes are being shut down as well.

It is indeed. Nintendo just "planned" better, although the more likely reason is they just didn't give a crap.

I think (and I could be wrong about that that climacs is riding the apparently popular notion that anything bad that happens can be safely blamed on Obama. Doesn't matter if he actually was responsible. It's one of those momes, er mimes, or whatever the kids call it...
