Synology America has unveiled the
DS415play, the four-bay follow-up to 2014's popular two-bay DS214play. As the second Synology NAS to support hardware video transcoding, the DS415play delivers full 1080p HD video to nearly any media-streaming device, with multiple streamers able to connect simultaneously.
The SATA-3 network attached storage device features up to 24TB of capacity, over 110 MB per second read performance and over 100MB per second write, two USB 3.0 and three USB 2.0 ports for external storage and peripherals, a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom dual-core CPU with FPU for faster file previews, and support for the pending series of Android TV devices. The NAS supports DLNA, iTunes streaming, Roku Players, and other media streaming devices.
RAID types supported by the device are Synology Hybrid, JBOD, and RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10. RAID 5 and JBOD can be expanded by adding external drives. Across all streaming devices, and fully populated, the DS214play can push 450 frames per second at 720p or 150 frames per second at 1080p. Streaming at higher resolutions is possible, with a total of 80 frames per second moved by the device at 2590x1944.
The DS415play is shipping now, and will be available in the United States in the next couple of weeks. Retail price for the new NAS is $540.
