Today is my forum birthday! Check out my sig!
Wow, things sure have changed since I joined this forum 20 years ago with my dual G4 800 MHz setup. A full 6 years before the iPhone, on the eve of OSX 1.0 and the original iPod... heck, 20 years ago we were still watching old Standard Definition 4:3 porn, vs the immersive 360 UHD VR porn I can view tonight in my Facebook VR mask that I won at a church raffle.
Sucks to see S.J’s passing, but in many ways we see the revival of Newton, and the Knowledge Navigator in the iPhone.
Looking forward to another 20 years on MacNN Forums!

Well, you’re just a veritable forum baby compared to me.
I came on board because this was the spot to keep track of OS X native software. ‘Member OmniWeb?

OmniGroup is still around. Their products are still great. Though I miss their OSX game ports. I was a beta tester on one of those.

I use OmniFocus!
Fallout is one of my favorite games ever, so their ports are near and dear to me. I actually wrote them a thank you email when it came out.

I went back and read some of my posts from ~2000ish. Yikes. Let's keep the past in the past.

So far blaze is winning this thread as older member, unless laminar had a previous account...

It's a pity that I missed my anniversary … But it is amazing to think that when I first joined, I was in my second year of university …

I miss the old internet, forums like this one and a few others, pre facebook, when you had to have a few braincells to at least sign up for forums with an email, get approval, and then post things. FB just lowered the barrier of entry so all the boomers joined in and just spam their stupid non fact checked slightly racist memes.

And people from before you were on the internet lament the time when idiots like you and I were able to get on the internet and shit all over everything.

My take is that "troll" has deeper roots in childhood fairytales and the like, and easily conjures a very ugly, negative image in people's minds. There's also the whole DnD/sorcerer/majiks underbelly of geek culture that "troll" really appeals to.
"Flame" on the other hand, just isn't as colorful or evocative.

Ooo throwback setups, I like it. I'll go. This was 2000 or so. Maybe 2001.
I actually still have this thing, and I'm still pretty sure it's the most upgraded 1st gen iMac in the world. Harmoni 600mhz G3 upgrade w firewire port, Gamewizard 3dFX voodoo2, maxxed ram, huge 12 gig HDD. Haven't booted it up in years.

I love the design of those iMacs.
I was rocking an iBook G3 600 MHz or 800 MHz back then. The latter is probably my favorite computer ever. The battery lasted 5 hours of typing and Mac OS X looked like an OS from an alien space ship. It gave me access to all the power of Unix, but I could just plug in a USB printer and print. The 800 MHz version was the first machine that was fast enough for OS X. I just wish Apple had stuck to colors for longer.

I had a pair of iMac DVSEs. One of my favorite macs. Also one of the few times Mac hardware was more affordable than the PC equivalent.
My first OS X rig, too.

That iBook G4 was my first Apple laptop. Similar (if not identical) to Laminar's. I had the 1.0 GHz model.
The last days of the PowerPC.

That’s clearly a staged picture…. Way too neat. . I should also compliment you on the laptop stand. My AirPort Extreme sits on a PVC stand to raise it over the steel shelving unit that the rest of my networking stuff lives on.
I didn’t get my first Mac until I’d been here for about 5 years. The VA gave me a (then new) 15” MBP for school in 2006. I bought my Aluminum iMac (the 20” version) in 2007, and two years later we got my wife an early Unibody MacBook, also for school.
My computer desk always seems to have stickies and notebooks on it. Not to be handy, but for reference, usually on last week’s projects, or what I want to be working on. Thus my comment above.

My first "Mac" was a Powercenter 150 clone. It wasn't the tower model or the big chunky desktop model. It was the "slimline" pizzabox model. Damned if I can find a pic of it anywhere, though. Had the matching PowerComputing monitor, too.

My first ever Mac was special, it was a fully decked out PowerBook G3 Kanga. I bought it on atrada.de, a platform that was bought by ebay.com a bit later, for 75 % off. It had 160 MB RAM and a 5 GB hard drive in 1998. My friends with their puny PCs had I think 32 MB on average.

SE 1/20. second revision — no longer the squirrel-cage fan, but not yet the computery smooth whooshing hiss of the later fans. A warm, purring noise very much like our fishtank pump.
The hard drive was a 20 MB Seagate that didn’t tick on access, it squeaked.
So you had this friendly little box purring at you and incessantly twitter-twitting at you as soon as you turned it on.
Later upgraded to 40MB Quantum and 2.5 MB RAM.
I still miss it.
