Finally saw it.
Since I never got through the book I had this odd sensation I was seeing a remake of the Lynch movie.

Things which were superior in the Lynch version:
The jell-o cube shields.
The hunter-seeker. Isn’t “hunter-seeker” redundant?
Some (but not all) of the costume design.
Some (but not all) of the production design.
If we limit it to the first scene, the Navigators.

Nothing. The answer is nothing.
See it in imax? I caught it at one of those true laser theatres (there’s only a handful in Canada) and got seats right in the sweet spot. Entire field of vision was covered, it was almost overwhelming. Incredible

I thought about mentioning Duncan Donuts. Then about swimming pool dunc-ing.
Your title has been fixed. I'll show myself out now, as I haven't seen the movie.

This movie made me soooo happy.
I gobbled up the books up to Chapterhouse as a kid, and this is the way I wanted the movie made. Can’t wait for the second half.
The Lynch movie is pretty awesome, but you have to see it as „inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune“.

It’s like that, but with less BSDM, and fewer pustules.

It was beautiful, but could have been edited down a half hour. Perhaps 20 minutes less of staring into the distance mournfully.

The ornithopter spinning in the sandstorm was one of those scenes. “Let go… use the force, Luke”. Yeah, we get it.
Also, the dragonfly ornithopters are a neat idea, but I really feel they should have been more ponderous.

They're not a "neat idea"; they're in the fucking books.

Well, then perhaps he shouldn’t have used the prefix meaning “of or pertaining to birds”.

Entomopter.
The term "ornithopter" didn't originate with Herbert, btw. It described any flappy-winged mechanical flying thingum.

That’s what they were called in the book? I didn’t get through it, but I remember ornithopter.

And maybe cut out 16 of the 22 identical dream sequences of Zendaya.

Yep. The word predates Herbert.

I never said it didn’t.
What I said is the prefix “ornith-“ makes me think birds, not insects, because “of or pertaining to birds” is what the prefix means.

You can use that word in your book then.
The word Herbert used in his book was “ornithopter”, which makes me think birds, because that’s what it means.

I haven’t seen the newest movie, but I’m encouraged by what I’ve heard.
I read the original novel a very long time ago. I had high hopes about the Lynch film. It wasn’t “the book,” but it was an enjoyable treatment.
I’ll also point out that I have NOT read any of the subsequent novels. Looking at synopses, I would probably be disappointed in the story content, even if there was plenty of back story and history to explain parts of the original novel that could benefit from that.

I'm with Glen. I rather liked the 1st book, but wasn't as much into the later ones. Which did fill out the universe, both backwards and forwards. But now I remember the story as a block.

I know I’ve mentioned it before, what caught my fancy far more than anything else was the Dune Encyclopedia. All the history and worldbuilding, with no plot to get in the way.
Herbert ended up steamrollering much of it, which is a pity. It was better than the stuff he came up with.
As for the movies, I still feel like they’re close enough to each other I’m not seeing how one is this big divergence from the book while the other isn’t. I mean, less BSDM and pustules, and the sand worms look less like a dong, but they’re both telling the same story. To be fair, I’m guessing there’s more divergence with the second half of Lynch’s movie.

According to the Dune Encyclopedia, Paul’s son is half-man, half-worm, and becomes God-Emperor of the universe for 30,000 years.
Cool idea at least.

Yep. The second half was mostly an '80s action movie loosely based on the Dune characters. Think second half Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. Yeah, it's kinda partly the story somewhere in there, but actually, it's completely missing the point. Still fun.

Yes, absolutely.
I really despised how they desperately shoehorned a story arc into the second half, despite the whole point of the original trilogy being that there wasn't one.
Or rather, the arcs that Adams built into the coda (with Fenchurch and Agrajag) were not used in the film.
Still, I thought the Vogons were spot-on, and I enjoyed Malkovich's performance.

Which I loved!
Also loved the Infocom game, but that was pretty brutal.
Edit: best Infocom game? I know people say Planetfall, but it’s totally Suspended. That setup works best with the “Groundhog Day” nature of Infocom games.

How long did you spend trying to make tea. My friend and I spent forever.
We also liked the labyrinth infocom game, IIRC. Adumbrate Jareth!
