Very different shows. I lived the Ren & Stimpy era, but it really is more of a subversive pre-teen & older show.

Bluey is a true kids show that can be genuinely enjoyed by all ages.

Again, I haven’t seen a MAD magazine in maybe 25 years, but the obvious answer is that I don’t think the content was terribly appropriate for most 7yos I know.

It’s the same reason my kids haven’t yet watched Princess Mononoke or Blair Witch Project, or read 1984. I’m sure they will at some point, but I don’t think they’re ready yet.

Bluey is a really great show.

Here’s one I distinctly remember. Where I got it says it’s from 1974. If true, I must have read a reprint, so I couldn’t tell you how old I was.

In terms of what we’re talking about, the beauty of this cartoon is the structure is about as complicated as Sesame Street. It provides unambiguous guidance to the more complicated themes it presents.

That’s what stands out to me as the bigger question with MAD of that era. Is it giving guidance a parent is comfortable with?

I remember reading mad when I was maybe 12ish? I liked the folding pages. But then I had older siblings to leave things like that around.
Ren and Stimpy is def not a kids show.
I've only seen a little Bluey but it looks calming and not terribly annoying. (I think I watched a few episodes when I was sick and could find nothing else on.)

Fallout

Liked the first 30 mins. Sat though the rest. Not sure I can be motivated to watch more. In some ways it feels like I've seen it all before in other shows. Unfair? The youth seem to like it very much.

At least its not Rebel Moon.

Yeah, it’s interesting. Through 3 episodes myself. It’s kind of like a Silo **Ricky Gervais voice** without all that….prestige. Not necessarily in a bad way, it just really embraces the gore and schlock.

3 Body Problem

No mentions or discussions so far? I had reasonably low expectations but I have to say I was hooked from minute 1 to minute the end. Benedict Wong is excellent, nanofibre babe is... not.
Red Wedding adjacent scene in Ep5 is mad but manages not to overwhelm the show. Cast is established to be as expendable as they were in GoT, which is fun!
A solid 9/10 watch.

3 Body Problem was just not good in my opinion. But that one scene with the ship was quite a spectacle.

Shogun is not perfect — the main actor seems to be channeling a homeless man’s Tom Hardy which is throwing me off — but it’s really good after 7 episodes.

One Chamberlain joint I didn’t see, but remember being all the rage was The Thorn Birds. This just irritated me for preempting shows I wanted to watch.

Star Trek: Prodigy (originally on nick and paramount+, since moved to Netflix)

This is a CGI animated show, generally billed as a kid show. It does work for kids, but they put in the effort to serve adults too.

If you liked the 90s treks (TNG, DS9, Voy), then Prodigy has what is lacking in more recent fare. I enjoyed Season 1 all the way through (S2 will be generally released sometime this year). The show opens approximately 5 years after Voyager returned to Earth.

Shame. The insipid formula of ten-minute intro with arrival on whatever world is supposed to solve his problem, then the special challenge for this game level — the one that the people who can help him have been struggling with for years but that only he can overcome by his Ruthlessness — (oh look it's a quote from the original trilogy! Yay, fan service! except they've changed a line to something about "the way" hahaha), garnished with random side characters that appeared in the background of some random scene somewhere in the original trilogy that screw him over, do him favours, or try to kill him… the tedium just isn't made up for by the actual story reveal in Episode 4.

My wife started calling actual lines of dialogue literally seconds before they came on, verbatim.

Boba Fett sucked so hard I didn’t even finish it. Just terrible.
I never understood the love-on Star Wars nerds have for Ahsoka. I didn’t even take a look at the series. Frankly, I think Star Wars as a whole is tapped-out.
