I've picked up a Mac Plus for the huge sum of Aus$2.00, a bargin? (they went for US$2600 new!)
My question is, can I network it with my iMac DVSE, and if so, what is the best way (cheapest ) way to do so.
It's such a cute little computer, I don't really want to turn it into a fish tank.
I've also posted this in the iMac forum.

The Macintosh Plus has two serial ports. I think you can buy a USB to serial adapter that support Localtalk to add several serial ports to the iMac.

Then you could use a serial cable to connect the Macintosh Plus and the iMac together. They can communicate with each other using Appletalk through the LocalTalk connection.

There is a good site about Macintosh networking called "Three Macs and a Printer". I don't know where to find it now, may be some people know where it is.

I think the things you need are probably new products.

dante, there is a product called the Stealth Serial Port card for the iMac which you may be interested in. It is said there that the card can be use with the iMac revision A-D. I don't know if it will work with the later iMacs such as yours.

Go to http://www.geethree.com/imac.html for more information. The card support Localtalk so one can use a serial cable and connect the iMac to the Macintosh Plus.

Regarding the Mac Plus:
I saw on the latest MacAddict CD that Ice-T was using a Mac Plus to do CD inserts in his recording studio.

Also, you can't use a USB serial port adapter with AppleTalk, but you could use the Asante ethertalk to localtalk bridge to hook the imac into a localtalk network with the Mac Plus. You probably won't be able to read the imac's HD with the Mac PLus, since the imac is HFS+ format (I'm not sure it makes a diff.), and in any case is too large for any OS that the plus will run (up through 7.1 I think).

The serial port solutions for the imac require that you pull the modem. At least the ones I've seen do.
