Has anyone gotten a 6500 and a ATI Rage Orion video card to work successfully?

The 2D quicktime stuff works great. The problem I have is that the computer hangs while running any number of games using hardware rendering. The games will start then freeze a few seconds into playing. This includes Nanosaur and Future Cop, both come with the video card.

I have contacted ATI both thru email and phone but nothing they have suggested works. Help!!!

Thanks!
Steve

Kind of a stab in the dark, but i think maybe the card wants a higher bus speed than a 6500 has. i know most computers of that generation have a bus speed of about 40 MHz, so i am not completely sure.

It should be fine in the 6500 - I have one in my Umax c500 (a 6400 at heart).

There is a patch available from ATi to address specific problems on these machines. http://support.atitech.ca/infobase/3384.html

Although it states that the machine "will not boot", I was able to boot with some creative extension loading, but didn't get much further.

The patch made everything work fine!

Yeah, I have the patch. I was one of the lucky ones that had the start-up hang....

It's weird, everything else works, except the 3D stuff. The thing I bought the card for...

I had heard other people having the same problems but not fixes. Most took the cards back to where they got 'em. I am pass the return time and keeping my fingers cross that ATI will come across a fix...Thanks!

Steve

FWIW, macops, the PCI bus speed is independent of the motherboard speed. The PCI bridge chip's job is to mediate the motherboard bus to the PCI bus while maintaining speed.

Ok, Here's an update...

Just downloaded the driver update from ATI...Same problem (freezing in games, etc.), but I discovered something interesting with the ATI Resource Manager extensions. When I use the ATI pull down menu or ATI control panel and click on [details] I get the message that the File ( ATI resource manager) is not currently in the extensions folder. Huh? It sure as shoot is!!!

Is there a fix?

I think I may need to hand return this card to ATI myself. This is crazy!!!

Here's the reply from ATI after sending them the above info:

ATI Software Engineering has been advised of the above issue and is
investigating.

SOLUTION: NONE AT THIS TIME. - this issue has no apparent impact on system
performance.

Regarding:

Just downloaded the latest driver update...Same problem (freezing in games,
etc.),

ATI Technical Support has received reports of games freezing in Performa
6400 series and Power Mac 6500 series based systems. Recently ATI Technical
Support was able to test a PowerMac 6500. We were unable to duplicate any
of the issues reported. All QuickDraw 3D RAVE and OpenGL games worked fine.

My recomendation at this time would be the following:

1. Clean install Mac OS 8.5
2. Update to Mac OS 8.6
3. Remove any ATI system components installed at this point
4. Easy install ATI software using the 4.2 Universal Installer ( http://support.atitech.ca/drivers/xclaim.html
<http://support.atitech.ca/drivers/xclaim.html> ) - restart
5. Install OpenGL 1.1.2 ( http://www.apple.com/opengl/
<http://www.apple.com/opengl/> ) - restart
6. Test games
7. If the problem persists at this point please send in an Apple System
Profiler report and another ATI Problem Report

If you wish to have the product replaced please contact ATI Technical
Support directly at 605-882-2626 to arrange an RMA. If you wish to return
the product I would direct you to Sales ( [email protected]
<mailto:[email protected]> ) at this time.

Should you require any further information or assistance, do not hesitate to
contact us again.

Please quote your ATI Customer Number, xxxxxxx, in any future
correspondence.

Regards,

Sorry to say I haven't found a fix, but I guess enough people have complained. Earlier this week MacFixit or MacNewsNetwork (macnn.com) had a short article stating that ATI is finally looking into the problem. ATI has a webpage dedicated to the problem. No fixes yet, the page states they are working on the problem and lists some of the games affected.

Here's the link to ATI's site.

Good luck,
